I'm good for either.

Fine with unlinked. Whatever is easiest. Uploading drums now (too large for attachement here 14MB), not what you would call session quality but good enough for fun/testing.

Mono ribbon 8ft away in front, oddball stereo XY Sennheiser behind drummers head and a Peluso 248 tube mic out in the hallway.

Prime for abuse. Link here:

Download DrumRoom.wav from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Thanks!!!

What I would like to hear is for you to download the unprocessed vocal from the Vintage King website "hear the gear" section that they use to demonstrate mono compressors and run it through the OPT1A. (Just because that gives something to compare it with, since you can listen to the same vocal track through an LA2A, Shadow Hills, etc. on their site).

As found here:

good idea! i'd also love to hear it on vocals compared to other comps. while you're at it you could also compare it to the dry rockmix and drumbus examples of the tsl-3 on the VK site. thanks

Alright so you guys want me to do both the samples posted here and on VK's site? Is the guy with the TSL-3 down to do all that as well? I'm gonna knock this out this week as I'm busy for the rest of the weekend.

Wolfgang and Starski, thanks to both of you for volunteering your time and equipment for our collective education! That is very cool.

I have a suggestion for a way to do this that would hopefully use your time effectively and would give us a meaningful result.

The question we are all asking is "Can the OPT1A sound like the TSL3?" My thought is, Wolfgang should go first, crush the files to taste with his original Vac Racs and then send the crushed files to Starski. Starski can then simply try to match the sound of the VR's as closely as possible with the OPT1A and then post the files so we can all see how close it got. That way it's all about ears and not about whether the two compressors sound the same at certain settings or not.

I'm open to anything you guys want to do, and I'm really appreciative that you are undertaking this. Just a suggestion that I hope will make this easier and better for all.

Agreed. Most importantly, how does the OPT1A sound when set to stun? (both knobs maxed out) That's the magic setting on the Vac Rac, and what I'm hoping for from the OPT1A.

o.k. just for me to understand it, what files do you want me to run through the vac rac.

If possible no MP3s ;-)

You could start with the male vocal track here:

Universal Audio LA-2A Audio Samples | VintageKing.com. It's a 24-bit uncompressed .wav file. (Obviously use the unprocessed file that's available for download.)

Perhaps do one pass with light compression and another where you really hit it hard, for comparison purposes.

If you feel like it you could also do the acoustic guitar file on that page.

I don't understand why you have to wait for him... You want to attempt to match the results he's getting by ear?

Matching by ear was my suggestion so that the two processed files actually sound something alike, and because what we're all wondering is "Can the OPT1A sound like the TSL3?"

If they take a different approach to compressing the files it will make it harder to answer that question.

If you have a better idea I'm all for it. That's just what's on the table for now.

This certainly seems like fair use to me, especially since we are using it to check out a product that they themselves are selling.

Vintage King isn't just selling the OPT1A, Inward's worldwide distribution also appears to be handled by Vintage King's distribution arm.
