Yesterday, we officially released the stereo expander module for the P3500, dubbed the P3500S.

Roger,

The P3500 and P3500S Expansion Module has been getting put to work @ the Meth Lab and I must say, I've been achieving some really amazing results over the stereo buss and tracking stereo pairs of microphones that need a little "binding" and cohesion going into the recorder. It tracks stereo UNBELIEVABLY well, even better than some rack units I have used.

Great Work on this beast! Another excellent product from FCS.

WOW

This looks REALLY cool.

So, the expander module essentially is the "2nd compressor channel", just without the knobs, eh? That's a really great idea. The 500 series just keeps maturing, due to great innovations like this. Do they link at the edge connector? Pin 6, etc...?

Nice work!

Here's a post I just did in another thread;

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/4591501-post95.html

I hope this helps....

Maybe Roger can pop in and give us some insight about the topology of the linking. Its actually pretty impressive. I think anyway.

You may have answered this on the other thread, but I will address the linking question here.

The P3500 and the P3500S link through a 6 conductor cable between boards. The cable is included with each unit. It is designed such that the P3500 goes to the left of the expander. They need to be side by side.

The cable plugs into the compressor first, then is routed through a bushing in the back plate of the expander and finally plugged into the mating connector on the expander. The cable is symmetrical so it cannot be plugged in incorrectly.

Random bits here;
Just saw a post from my main beta tester/consultant and he was saying that even when linked, it works just fine as a mono compressor.

Thanks all!

Cool,

Do they somehow fasten to one another? I'm thinking in case someone were to pull out one module? Or, I guess there could be enough slack in the cable not to damage it?

Hi soundrick
Thanks for your question!

There's enough slack in the cable to relieve stress and everything is very sturdy.
It would really take some doing to hurt anything.

Distortion mode (all timing constants switched out) in FB (feedback) mode is awesome on some mixes with the stereo link module. Much more elegant sounding and controllable than in FF mode, especially with sidechain HPF in. Or if you like the recent flaming Lips distortion sound, keep it set FF.

My current easy method:

Gain at unity, ratio 2:1, set threshold for a few db reduction, then raise gain to desired fuzz (gain interacts with compression in FB mode), retweak ratio to taste.

Good for single tracks too with a mono unit.
