Cloud Microphones JRS34 ribbon mic designed by Stephen Sank

Hi everybody:
Fen Ikner from Cloud Microphones here. We're a brand new company and we're about to release our first microphone, the JRS34, made entirely in the USA. This is a ribbon mic designed by ribbon master Stephen Sank- it derives its name from Stephen's father Jon R. Sank (born in '34), who designed microphones for RCA. With the same ribbons that the Sanks have used to refurbish countless RCA 44s over the years plus Cinemag transformers and a few new innovations, this mic delivers smooth, full, warm sound of the highest quality.
You can hear some audio (much more on the way) at the Cloud Microphones website. Please feel free to PM me or use any of the contact info on that site if you'd like to know more.
Thank you for reading!

Very cool name and design. I like the aesthetic a lot. That's a good start.

Congratulations on your new venture, I wish you good luck.

Is it correct that it requires phantom power ?
On a ribbon...........?????
How does the ribbon itself react on this ?

Greetz,

Paul

There are both passive AND active versions. The passive ones are shipping next week, the active ones a little after.
Thanks for your interest, everybody!

I just finished recording a couple of singer/song writer tunes, voice and guitar, with the JRS-34. I positioned the mic to catch both voice and guitar in one pass. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of HF response. I normally use ribbons to take the edge off of something.

The preamp was a GML. My only real issue was the wiring in my walls, floor and ceiling. I had to move the mic around a bit to null out some emf, Not a deal killer, but worth noting. I may have the emf pit from Hell, but my condenser mics and humbucking pickups on my Telecaster don't mind. Right now you need to be really careful or use a suspension mount, but I think Stephen said he was working on that.

There's compression, limiting and a bit of reverb on each track. I think I added a touch of HF EQ on HDYA and pulled out a bit of 125Hz on Flite 1549.

These are 24-bit files and will take some time to download, but I thought anyone really interested would appreciate hearing the mic in 24-bit mode.

Nice job Stephen. Sure you can't stick humbuckers in the mic?

I've been reading everything I can get my hands on in relation to this mic. While I get frequent flier miles from Clarance Kane, new mics that capture the old school (like Peluso, Wonder and others) is appealing to me more over time.

As far as the JRS-34 goes, is the bottom really chrome? I hate to be picky but I'd rather see brushed aluminum, nickel or black powdercoat. I know, I know, it won't affect the sound but my guess is chrome will be distracting to a performer or show all the grubby fingerprints. I am in southern Arizona and Cloud is in Tucson, 75 miles away so maybe I will make a trip up there. Larry Crane (TapeOp Editor) lives 15 miles from me so maybe I will talk him into going up with me.

Wow! Good stuff Paul! Did you use it on just your flute or the piano and such as well? I assume nothing.
