New Neve 8816 Summing Mixer

Neve 8816 Summing Mixer
The legendary sound of Neve now becomes available to DAW based producers

(September 08,2005)
The sound of Neve has been the audio recording benchmark for generations of leading engineers, musicians and producers. Wherever sound matters, from a full orchestral recording for a blockbuster film to a lone singer, from a rock drummer to an R’n’B vocal, Neve technology provides the warmth, punch and definition so sought after by modern and classic producers.
The legendary sound of Neve now becomes available to DAW based producers with the launch of the Neve 8816 Summing Mixer. Comprehensive input, mixing and monitoring functions upgrade a DAW to a professional mixing facility.
The sixteen input channels include level, pan, cut and cue controls. A +15dB gain range accommodates both -10dBv and +4dbm input levels. If sixteen inputs aren’t enough for your mix, multiple 8816 units can be cascaded together via the fixed level two track buss.

The ultimate analogue mix buss utilises classic Neve transformer mixing topology. The mix outputs appear simultaneously as balanced +4dBm and unbalanced - 10dBv. Mix Inserts are pre-fade for full control and can be switched between normal insert mode and mastering style sum and difference mode with stereo width control. A post insert mix function can be used for mixing in a separate stem or blending the mix with a special effect .
An optional digital output converts the analogue mix to any standard PCM sample rate up to 192kHz or DSD, a unique feature extending Neve’s commitment to the ultimate analogue and digital sound. Output PPM meters are complemented by overload LEDs to indicate clipping at the ADC or analogue output.
The monitor section selects between Mix Out, 2 Track Return, Channels 1 & 2 (DAW mix replay) and "i-mon" front panel input min-jack, handy for quick mix comparisons. The monitor level is independent of the mix level and the monitor outputs can be switched between Main and Alt speakers. A separate Cue Output can be fed from three sources and the inbuilt Talkback mic. Headphones can be used to listen to either Cue or Monitor source.
A remarkable amount of mixing and monitoring technology for $3,250 but that’s not all. The final touch? Total recall! A USB connector allows snapshots of the 8816 setting to be saved to a PC and recalled ready for remix!

So will this replace the Dangerous 2 buss ... is it kind of the same concept , to help the ITB mixes .

Seeing & Hearing is Believing!

Sounds good but I'll believe it when I see it & hear it. Pitty there's no EQ. Other than that sounds like a solid product.

Seems cool! I hope SSL will make something similar in answer to Neve. Exciting times

I'll believe it when I see it and hear it..[does sound very cool on paper though]
in probably 8-10 months

I think when the dust settles with this summing/mixer frenzy,,
The guys who can not only do something great sonically, AND a proper automation package, are gonna be the winners..[SSL are on the right track, but 90 plus G's?.. ]
..I've been experimenting with the summing thing for a few months and without at least some pre daw fader inserts for your outboard goodies or hardware inserts pre hardware fader and automation[don't get me started about busses??!!] its a real drag trying to mix properly OTB..
for me, the OTB thing is a major work in progress.
although I get this overwhelming feeling i'll be back on a console in the next year or so anyways. stike

Not quite unexpected yeah. Combined with the XRack (for which i guess they'll release EQ's as well) and XLogic series, you could build a nice modular small SSL.

I have a feeling that this might be rack mountable a la API 8200 series.

Holy shit!!!!

Until now the summing wars have not really interested me, but if the quality and sound is comaprable with that of the new AMS reissues then, this SERIOUSLY is going to change the lines in the sand in relation to USED console prices, other summing options etc.

More overly, im impressed that some of these larger traditional companies are actually starting to take the initiative and actively read and agree where the new markets are in relation to what users like us here on GS and elsewhere really want!. We dont all want, need or have the space for an 88R or 9000K in our bedrooms.

Give the people what they want and im sure they will buy it! And i think this is a prime example of that adage!

Cheers
Wiggy

Cool. You guys can sell me your Nicerizer 16 at a good price when you upgrade to the Neve.

Edit: The price is actually cheaper than the N16. $3299ish so I'll just shut up now.

I'll keep that in mind. Although when my Soundcraft console returns from the shop, I'm probably keeping the Nicerizer 16 to use with it. It sounds so good!

I think the concept of summing boxes is to do your mixing ITB and then stem it out. When you try to add a bunch of analog outboard it gets complicated. That's the kind of routing headache I'm trying to avoid, which is why I got rid of the Sony DMX. Digital mixing with no delay compensation sucks.

Maybe this whole summing thing will create a market for mid level analog consoles that sound good, without too many bells and whistles to keep the price down.

But a D-Command and well equipped rack with one of these new summing options will fit into my small space (and buget) quite nicely!

I think I'm gonna wait about 12 months or so and let all of the cool summing devices hit the street before I dive in. Let's see Cranesong, Tonelux, SSL, API, AMS Neve, etc, etc, the summing wars are looking better and better every day! Exciting times indeed.

I'm curious as to the innards of this new Neve box..
passive summing into a couple of line amps?...ala API 8200
or line amps on every channel...
...based on Neve pricing,I'm very interested to see what they can do for 3200.00..
.... just have to wait until AES.
I think this is just the tip of the iceberg,,We'll probably gonna see an even bigger surge in these boxes hitting the market in the next 6 months.
as far as i'm concerned ,the more console like ,the better.
bring it on! stike

what does "USB total recall" mean?
that it wont have any real rotary knobs and panponts, but some leds and buttons instead, or that an electronic system reads the voltages internally so that it saves a fotosnapshoipt as a computer that you can use to reset the knobs, just like in a SSL?

anyway, this looks too goob to be true:

- 16 channel summing mixer with level, panpots, mute and solo, PER CHANNEL
- Neve transformers
- Full Monitoring section, including source select, talkback and 2 sets speaker outs
- "i-mon" mini-jack input for an ipod as source
- DSD A/D option
- "88xx Neve" name on the front panel
- USB total recall

- $3,3250!!

Christmas on september.

This sounds great! Anyone got pics of it?

Post some pics up!!!!

PS: AMS Neve did the pricing right on this one. If it comes out, I'm sure I'll be getting one for sure!

WOW! brakes halted on aws900 plans.

nice move. if it sounds like we all hope it sounds with a $3k price point NEVE has just won the summing battle. usb recall and digital output option is icing on the cake. neve summer, my ssl 2buss comp, and maybe portico tape sim- after i hear it and now we talking.

if SSL counters w/ something similar...

Yeah, SSL come out with a summer/mixer around this price. Add one of them and this Neve and get the best of both worlds!

The really stunning thing IMHO is the total recall. That is awesome! Total Recall is the only thing that kept me away from summing boxes so far.

And if there are level controls on the summing box, you can send hotter signals through you D/A converters which helps also.

Has anyone found a picture of it yet?

One of the greatest pleasures on this earth is running tracks through Neve modules and overdriving them...things just pop-out of the monitors like nothing else!!!

If running tracks in this board is the same as the line inputs on the modules than as people already mentioned, the summing game is over....and who better to win!
