McDSP Retro Recorder

Anyone else see this?

Retro Recorder

Quote:
Put some fun back into audio recording with Retro Recorder by McDSP. The highly stylized yet simple interface makes recording easy on any iPhone. Patent pending Audio Level eXtension (ALX) technology improves recording quality beyond the capability of hand held recorders costing many times more. Even without an external microphone, Retro Recorder can capture detail other recorders cannot - up to 32 times more signal level.
Recorded files can be exported individually or in batches. Exported files may then be downloaded to a PC or Mac, using a Wi-Fi network.

Supports iPhone and second generation iPod Touch. An external microphone is required to use Retro Recorder on the second generation iPod Touch.

Feature highlights:

Up to 30 dB (32 x) more signal level with ALX technology
Audition ALX processing instantly during playback, the original recording is preserved
Export original recordings or ALX enhanced versions in WAV format
Wi-Fi download page allows downloading to any Mac or PC with most web browsers
Batch rename, delete, and export makes organizing a snap
User interface rotates 180 degrees for better iPhone microphone orientation when recording
External microphone support
Record short ideas or lengthy meetings for hours, even in sleep mode
Pause, fast forward, or rewind signals during playback
Filter list of recordings by keyword to find your recording fast
Recorder page allows quick review of last clip recorded, great for level checks
Supports mono signals only, up to 22,050 Hz sample rate
Developed and supported by a prof

Sells for $2.99 at the iTunes Store.

Curiously misleading name.

Sounds like a lo-fi dictaphone-style recorder.

Strange marketing.

Seems like a dictaphone. not what I was expecting from McDSP. I have seen apps out there that have 4 tracks, overdubbing, internal bouncing and a click.

When I read the title of the press release I was intrigued, hoping for a small mixer with versions of the Retro Pack or something like that. Now that I've slept on it, I'm not sure why I wanted to mix on an iPhone anyway

Howdy from McDSP

Howdy all,

the idea behind Retro Recorder it two things...

1) Enhanced mobile recording

2) with style !!!!

...we couldn't leave well enough alone by making a recording app for the iPhone that has patent pending dsp smarts (we've called it Audio Level eXtension, or ALX for short). We had to make it look cool too. And the recording quality is pretty darn compelling - in my completely biased opinion.

Now multi-track and other features? You folks let us know what you want. We're just getting started.

Great idea Colin! I'd love to see it have a few more tracks. Even 4 would be cool. I'd love to be able to do a decent demo with it, "sketching" a few different part ideas. There are so many cool things you could do, and I'm sure you will! Nice one Colin.

I'd like to know a little bit more about the possibilities for organizing recorded files in to separate categories. is that possible?

Retro Recorder file organization

Howdy again,

while you cannot put recording files into categories, there are some great search features as you browse your list of recordings.

Most importantly, however, you can export the files with (or without) the ALX processing, and then download them from the iPhone over a Wi-Fi network.

For $2.99 you can check it out all you want!

Hey, that's a good tool for the iPhone, for sure.

But I hope you'll not waste your time and effort on this instead of developing new powerful plugins ;-).

More McDSP Plug-ins...? You bet !!!

Howdy,

someone here expressed concerns we're not making any more plug-ins for you folks.

Rest assured we've got plenty of that in the pipeline as well. We hope to release at least one this fall at AES!

Now I gotta get back to work on it !!!

Please a pause button to suspend-restart recording without a new file!

Please add a "pause" button to this! Even the old cassette recorders whose interface you are copying had them! Then I don't have to have a new file every time I start and stop. You could use a little bit of that room currently taken up by the big "ALX" logo.

also, personally I don't care about the multi-track thing for this particular app. That's another app that I think would need a different interface. Keep this elegant and simple.

I could not agree more with this statement.

As a Logic Pro/Euphonix/UAD-2 user I would love to drop some McDSP in my sessions.... If you're coding so well on iPhone (already bought your app and really like it!!) please code for AU!!!

Sorry to butt in on this one, but there are a few stereo recording apps with viewable waveforms, (and in ones case, editing). Audiofile Engineering makes one with waveform view and elegant uploading, etc. Yudo makes one with editing. They are a little more pricey, but not much, and much more useful.

I use the Blue Mikey (got it for like $60 at GC) and it works/sounds totally cool. It has 3 different input levels so you don't get that crazy auto input riding. Just plug it in to the bottom of your phone and voila! a 16 bit/44.1 stereo recorder.

It's been working great, though I haven't tried it since the 3.0 update. I'll try it again and post again.

McDSP Retro Recorder - Audio Clip Contest!

Howdy all,

in case you have not tried out our new iPhone application called Retro Recorder, now might be an even better time to do it. We're having a contest by which you can win up to $50 from the iTunes Music store. Check out Retro Recorder for details.

Also - we're running a sale for a limited time on Retro Recorder as well.

And for those of you who worry we're not making plug-ins any more - golly if you saw what was on my computer today you'd never stop calling me to ask when it would be ready. So hang in there !!!! And NO - don't ask me about it !!!!!

I've used this app with the Blue Mikey and an Iphone 3G. The iphone 3G works great with the Blue Mikey, it's just that Apple doesn't officially "endorse" it, and Blue is too scared to legally tangle with Apple and even hint that it should work.
