I have to say, the V Studio 100 looks like a really cool piece of gear, depending on how much it costs. I would have suggested it be battery powered for really convenient field use. I wonder, though, if it has multi-track capabilities? It mentions being able to play to backing tracks, assuming that you could mix that down live. Obviously you could import a bunch of stems tracked independently to the same backing track or metronome into a DAW, but could you track and mix 4 instruments, 8, 16... on the fly or via bounce down for a little portable song writing tool?

I also wonder if this device will record timecode via MTC into the MIDI port. This would open it up for use in video production, although I'm not sure it would be this devices strength considering the number of professional products already on the market, unless its price can leverage itself into the indy marketspace.

I'm really digging the "without a computer" features of the device. I think that is where it shines. I just never thought that a computer is the right tool for a remote gig or impromptu recording. $699 is right on the inflection point of cheap / expensive for me, especially as I already have good field recorders and battery operated preamps, but for someone just starting out, it looks like a good premium entry level solution.

Look really Good

The Control surface is very appealing to me.

Don't care much about the ''away from computer'' features and the mic pres.

VX-64 looks really cool

Wish they can make a 4 fader control with act , no pres, no live recording. Just a nice control surface

Was excited by the control service, and restored my faith in cakewalk listening to its customers. Then saw on their forum a target street of $2500. Yaaaaay...Booooo

They almost got it right. I would think the price will ensure that it will fail in the market. I also think it really undervalues the other components of the integrated package -- for an additional $1500 you get software, converters with pres, and a hardware synth.

They are trying to compare it to the euphonix stuff - but those products have i think a built in mark up for design aesthetics and brand name/history. I would consider a more fair comparison to be the mackies. Add a bit of a premium for integration and maybe you have $1500. The fact that it seems like there is no expansion to more faders is a major drawback. And you look at some other adjacent products with equivelant though not identical features (A&H Zed R-16, digi command 8, various digital mixers) and you gotta scratch your head thinking who this product will be geared towards.

You must be looking at something different, Monty. The V-Studio 100 is only $699. The V-Studio rack unit is $2k, and the VS-700, the big control surface/ I/O /synth, is $4200.

The VS-100 looks pretty sweet as a portable control surface and I/O for using with Sonar (though it says compatible with most DAWs). Roland's not known for making preamps (and Boss is known only for their effects), so one can only assume they've used Edirol-designed pres in it...but it has ADAT in, so you can always bring a rack or lunchbox with you. The rest of it looks pretty sweet though.

nah he's talking about the V700 console as a standalone device without Sonar 8, I/O and Synth. Cakewalk have posted on their forum it should be on sale with a street price of $2400.

Amazing! You folks birthed a winner!

This really is quite an accomplishment for Cakewalk/Roland. The software update to full produicer 8.3.1 is $399. Full mix and mastering suites included and all kinds of other neto guitar, bass and synth stuff included. For a grand you have an 8 Track portable interface writeable on up to 32 GB flash cards at 24/96 IO at $105 each. What more does one need on the fly? No laptop, no fuss no muss. Transfer it all back at the studio onto a mini computer with Sonar, or Nuendo, or Digi, and whatever your fave UAD URS T5 or SSL plus you use and go nuts with it. For those who don't need anything more than 24/44.1-48 the TASCAM 2488 NEO rocks and can be linked very nicely via MTC send and return. For those who want higher cleaner fidelity recordings this box is a godsend. I'm exploring right now how to sync several together in realtime on the road for 32-48 tracks in realtime. And all at @ 64 BIT? Cakewalk/Sonar/Roland. You guys rock! I'm just a tad disappointed that the V-Studio700 didn't have a stand alone capability with 32GB Flash Card capability. They spent so much hardware space on ADAT AES and everything else connectivity that they forgot the simpicity of a stand alone recorder/controller interface with 8 XLR Mic Inputs? Oh snap! Maybe V.2.0? Hurry up and upgrade it. Its already overdue LOL. You kidding me? No firewire, no high end high cost Apogee, Lynx-Aurora, or anything else interfaces. Those can become later in the mastering chain if necessary. Plug in and go! Go go go! Yeaah! This technology rocks!

Sweetwater has the controller for $2500. Cakewalk VS700C | Sweetwater.com

I'm curious as to whether you can bypass the pres via the 1/4" inputs. This unit really looks good. The only bummer for me is I'm a Mac man and a PT lifer. I've tried to leave that DAW, but it's so ingrained in my melon that trying to pick up another is just torture. Logic was like calculus for me. U–G-L-Y.

But I must say this all-in-one has my gear lust stoked ridiculously high.

Almost but no cigar,

You know, I gotta agree with everything llmonty said:

It is outright stupid to price this stand alone controller that much higher than a Mackie Control Universal; which is proven, reputable, expandable and conforms to all major DAWs.

I just flashed by this at Sweetwater n' it looks tempting but if you decide to go for another DAW or work with two DAWs for more specific needs you're sh#t outta luck wit' you're workflow, compatibility, n' resale value. Digidesign has more affordable control surface options and I'm definitely not a fan of theirs as far as pricing/features go.

The Roland VS hardware synth looked interesting but they screwed that up by not making it it's own unit. I gotta put my my faith in Edirol converters, really??

The V-Studio bundle seems aimed to appeal more novice, less experienced, or entry-level. Not to denograte by any means but most active musicians/recording engineers should and could have at least a couple if not all these bases( interface, converter, synth, control surface ) covered more affordably even possibly beter performing too. So for that market, it's way overpriced compare to a Digi 003 bundle; as a whole this Cakewalk bundle shouldn't be higher than $3,000. The goal is to win over customers from the similar level product but insanely effective marketing campaign that is pro tools.

Me, I'm stickin' wit' Sonar 8, Mackie Control, Lucid 88192, Motif ES rack( I bought used )

To each his own,

Well,....

I was starting to get excited until I read the following in the review at Musician Friend:

"Now for the negitives. I am not that impressed with the stand alone wave recorder. When it is unpluged from the machine you can record onto a SD card. I put an 8 gig card into the reader and tried it. even though you can use all 8 inputs to record a track remotely without a computer. You can only record one mono or one stereo track at a time."

I'm just taken back how and why these companies are charging so much for so little.
