Here's UBK talking about his tweaked version of the FATSO at NAMM.

From what I remember... some compression modes are different. Designed to be nearly foolproof, like the classic 1 or 2 knob units. I can't wait to hear it, it seemed silly to me even to try at NAMM. I love the brown!

oh yeah, it's a totally different animal. 6 of the 7 fixed comps are *radically* different, they work on any source and it's impossible to make it sound bad, even at extremes. the low end and hf tone of the unit are also different, as is the responsiveness of the warmth control/hf limiter.

i'll be posting content and demos in the coming weeks, it'll be more than obvious what my fatso is about and just how different it is.

Question UBK, please chime in....

What are the modifications to it? I've always been thinking of picking up a fatso for the tape-sim warmth thing to add at the end of my 2bus chain. How would this thing do for something like that? Better/Worse then the Fatso? And whens this shipping+street price, where will it be sold?... Hopefully the video will be working soon...

ps. LOVE the look of this thing, pretty sure I'm gonna need one

How is the response of the compressor in the new Fatso under different modes?..I mean, i love my Fatso...but sometimes in certain modes I wish that the compressor do not Kick in so much even at very low input levels....

If the UBK Fatso have a more graduable way to control the GR at different modes and if the modes sounds totally different than the Original Fatso that will be awesome because will bring same magic maybe in a more organic/retro way.??

The video is on my friend's camera, and he has the day off due to the holiday. He's out with his girlfriend and is not at the computer. As soon as it's possible I'll try to upload again. Youtube says it's uploaded, but is processing the video. I don't know what's going on.

I want to comment briefly on the sound of the unit. I own a FATSO and have a pretty good feel of what it can and can't do. Greg demo'd the upgraded version for me and we spoke at length about the mods. I've always felt like the compressors were not as useful as they could be. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't. I usually could find another piece of gear to compress material in a way I found more pleasing. UBK FATSO is a whole new beast with a new personality. All the attack and release constants have been totally revamped. The compression feels entirely different to me. In a really good way of course! I was really impressed with the settings I heard. He had mono drums, bass, and electric guitar samples and we were nailing all of them with like 15dB's of gain reduction and it sounded f-ing awesome. It was amazing how the compressor was able to simultaneously pull the kick drum to the front of the mix and put the snare to the back while adding punch to both. The bass guitar sound we got using his "glue" setting with tranny was brilliant. It levelled the thing, gave it attitude, but still let it feel dynamic and thumping.

I think this is going to be a total winner. If you have a FATSO it's a no brainer in my book. If you don't have a FATSO there's now a new reason to have one. I think the goal was to create a tracking compressor that you could use all the time and not have screw up your music. From what I've heard so far I think UBK accomplished that. Also the faceplate looks great. It's less cluttered and easier on the eyes. The chocolate color looks unique and classy.

Brad

I got the same thoughts many times, so the UBK Fatso can achieve that?

Stupid question

Does it still have the old comp modes as well? How do you access them, since these are not mentioned on the interface?

Anyway, the UBK Fatso really got me interested. I'm looking for something track with, and to easily give me pleasing results, to get some attitude and mojo to the sounds I'm tracking with not too much monkey business and stuff getting on way.

The other major use would be to reprint tracks thru it back to the DAW, for example superior drum tracks etc, just to give them a little life. Currently using purple action and avedis E27 for analogue girth and warmth plus to get that tranny "electricity" sound (+ the eq and comp funtions ofcourse) to what I'm doing but I've really loved what the original fatso did and these mods really sound super promising.

BR,
H

Greg told me the final color would be more mocha than milk chocolate, as shown at NAMM. So think less yellow.

Brad

i also heard it @ NAMM, and i agree with everything Brad said.

what impressed me the most was on bass, UBK smashed it beyond belief... but the strange and cool part was that there's no bad artifacts. i've been waiting for a compressor like this.

crap, i've been meaning to save some dough...

People need to support this product so that Dave Derr will let UBK get his grubby mitts on other esteemed Empirical Labs products.

Oh yeah...Greg--send me those mixes we were talking about so that I can run some samples for you with the ATR tape.

AW, I kinda liked the milk choc./Coffee/Gold look, but I guess it's still nicer looking then the regular black. I LOVE that it's brown, SO VERY cool!

UBK,
are there any changes/mods to the tape sim thing that the Fatso does? Or is just the comp stages a little different? And if so, how does it differ from the original fatso? Pretty much looking at warming up my mix bus with inserting something like the Fatso or the CraneSong Hedd at the end of my mix bus chain, so wondering if the tape-sim got improved in your version, and have you tried using it in this kinda application to test yet?

Thanks,
