i dont want that sound EXACTLY... what i want is to take the germ pre into the Same Territory... and perhaps further. the sound files were just to point in a direction.

i know what the germ pre sounds like. i was one of the first germ owners and perhaps it's loudest cheerleader... so it's my dream to have a bigger version of my favorite preamp with more knobs & features... i'm suggesting a direction.. whether it's possible or wade agrees with the aesthetic is a different kettle of fish.. but i have to suggest it.

i think the sound represented by the files comes from banging the input transformer of a neve... i got really close to this with a 3114, banging the MIC PRE input with a sampler... its one of the wonderful sounds you can get by plugging things in wrong (line out into mic pre input)... kinda like the 1176's unintentional "all 4 ratio buttons IN" slam mode.

i'm sick of clean.. gimme more hi-fi dirt. i don't want a Copy, i want Similar But Different... a cousin, not a twin.

to me those 2 example tracks represent some of my favorite sounds ever on a record... consider them Inspiration.

Have you tried pounding the GERM to see if it gets you something you like?
Part of the features on the experimental "super germ" were for just these things.

You can go line in with two different impedances and beat both knobs and turn down the output...or you can beat the input and turn down the output...or go mic input with it hooked up "wrong" like you said. Turn up Drive and Feedback, pad, thick, impedance etc.
At Wageners we have liked both knobs at around 7 and backed off the output...usually with the Thick set to the 3/4 selection.

well, in a lot of ways it was liberating. i would never have chosen it, but i'm adaptable.

i now know i have a lot more to offer as a mixAE than the gear i previously collected.. it's gotten me into DIY gear, hot-rodding my own features, and design.. i'm working with a new hybrid mixing concept.. and have a publisher for a book on mixing, which i think will finally bring this "black art" into the light.

none of this would have happened if i still had my old bag o' tricks....

since i'm starting from zero i have to rethink all my old processes. this is ultimately good because i've made a number of breakthrus. i wouldn't have asked for it, but it will eventually be a profitable enterprise.

Wade,
super germ sounds like a great ideal, as a germ lover this box seems like a must have!

-Five input impedances with mic and Line inputs
-two input transformers
-two output impedances
-variable low cut
-variable thick control
-output control following entire circuit so Drive and feedback can both be driven
-bright switch
-single position high cut

these are GREAT additions to the germ!

what are the differences between the two input trannys?
would the bright switch be variable?

thanks
AA

The "super Germ" is laid out very different than the standard so I dont think so. There is probably about 3 times ore circuitry in the big one...

The whole thing has really been kind of an experiment so I guess Im just wondering if people would like to see this made...???
maybe make it an "limited edition"??

Okay, I'm really confused as to what this thread is about now. It's like missing an episode or two of Lost. Can someone do one of those narrated recaps?

Okay, thanks... I see how it morphed from Little Devils to Super Germ Pre now. I thought this was a new Little Devil format.

Yep thats what it will be exactly. The BIG gray knob is off old test gear so I could only make a limited amount that way, but I can have molds made if using them on our products is a must...Which I think it is!

Hey man. One tranny is the standard Germ tarnny that get the thick Germ sound. 300 ohm. The second is a St Ives and has a couple or impedance taps off of it...
It though of that on the bright but it worked well just as a toggle and I didn't want to over complicate that bit of it.

That was my first thought. Make 10 or 20 and see what happens. My mind has to stay busy so I need to keep making thses things even if no one want to buy them. Hahahahahahahahahahah!

It doesn't look like Wade has been here since just before Christmas... logged in, anyway.

Lurking, maybe? Hope all is well.

I'm too tired to search but I believe there was a YouTube vid of Wade talking about it at one of the trade shows. IIRC he was saying it was something he made for his own use as an exercise to see how cool it would be and no definite plans to release it. I'm pretty sure that would've been the time he was designing and ramping up production for his new 500 series modules.

There are really some nice ideas in this thread around.
I´m really looking forward to the new Music Fair in Francfort to visit you.
I´m very interested in this little devil channel strip. I hope i can bypass the micpre in order to buy two for using the EQ and Comp during mixing.
And i think there is much capability for the 500 series based on your already existing designs.... but the most i like are surprises... ;-)
