I don't mean to take this thread off topic, but is Avalon considered a clean pre? I don't know, haven't used many pre's at all. I'm still pretty new at recording.

I would describe the Avalon sound as clean and boring as opposed to clean and exciting (John Hardy, True Systems)

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I've been talking to Black Lion about the mod and the Auteur. I've been really debating doing it, but if the Auteur sounds at least as good as the Avalon (which I know a lot of people don't like) then it'll be a good choice for my situation. Any idea where the Auteur might fall on that graph? 1-10? Just a guess would be great.

So, it is fair to call the auteur a colored pre-amp?

I'm definitely not a seasoned pro with world class ears but I got my 2 Auteurs on Thursday. Not sure if these are "colored" or not but I just threw a mic up quick in my room (usually record vox in my walk in closet where its nice and dead) and ran a quick one shot take. Even in my open untreated (until tomorrow!!!) room, there was SOMETHING to the sound. I compared it to the takes that I had done with my avalon and the Auteur sounded...thicker is the only way I can describe it. Not saying this will help you, but my half-ass vocal with the auteur was more appealing to me than the perfected take with the Avalon. Of course that is completely my opinion and taste. Absolutely happy with the switch so far.

Thanks. I kind of figured it may be colored, but like I said, I'm not a pro. I've heard only a few pre's so I didn't want to give him false info if I wasn't correct. I do like them though and I've realized that thats all that counts.

Euro power supply

I wasn´t able to find a power supply that gives the correct power at european voltage, so I´ve been using my Auteur with a stepdown converter for the 240 to 110 v, using the US power supply that came with it.

I´m wondering if this makes the Auteor more prone to being noisy?
When recording acustic instruments I find my tracks being quite noisy. Could this be, or atleast partly due to the step down power converter? I see that there are expensive power converters people use for audio, mine is just a cheap 20$ type. So there must be a reason?

But it must be possible to swap the power supply for a correct euro power one? Anybody bought one and can point me to where to look?
