Lightbulb Standard Audio - Level-Or (Level-Loc based Comp for 500 Series)

Standard Audio is proud to introduce the first product of what will become our fun and useful line of modules for the 500 Series Rack Format: The Level-Or

Standard Audio Website

The Level-Or design is based on the classic Shure Level-Loc, a PA limiter that has been popularized as a funky, trashy effect on drum room mics. While the Level-Or can do the same thing as the Level-Loc, it can also do much more. A toggle switch on the front panel allows the user to change the Level-Or from "Level" mode to "Crunch" mode.

In "Level" mode, the Level-Or behaves like a Level-Loc, with a cool, funky limiting sound that is great on drum room mics and loops. We have added a release switch that allows the user to cut the release time in half compared to the original Level-Loc release time. We have added an output control, so the level going to tape (or DAC, etc.) can be adjusted as needed.

In "Crunch" mode, the sound of the unit is dominated by the distortion generated due to the Class A output stages being limited by their relatively low supply voltage. Sweeping the input level can result in an amazing array of tones that sound great on many different sources. So far, we have loved it on bass (synth and real), acoustic drums, and drum loops/electronic beats.

Unlike the original Level-Loc, which can be difficult to interface into a studio environment; the Level-Or has been designed to work with line level inputs and outputs. We have also added a 1/4" line input to the front panel.

The first run of units should be available within the next couple months at the longest. We are currently starting a waiting list for those interested; please email info@standard-audio.com to be placed on the list.

Please see our website for sound clips and feel free to get in touch for more info...

What else do you guys have planned for future modules? It's good to see something fun like this.

Thanks for the kind comments. As to what modules we have next, we are looking at a couple different ideas. Nothing is sure enough yet to let outta the bag, but I can say that they will be unique and very, very cool.

If I wasn't clear enough in the OP, please send an email to info@standard-audio.com if you wish to be placed on the waiting list.

Thanks!

We have found a few uses that we really like it on, but I'm sure people will start to find all sorts of cool ways to use it that we haven't thought of. I haven't personally tried it on vocals yet, but I'm sure you could get some cool effects from hitting it lightly or really going for it and completely destroying the vocal with the "Crunch" mode.

Our introductory price is $399. Probably one of the least expensive 500 series module out there.

I can't hear the samples, I'm on a Mac and everytime I click on one of the links my browsers (Safari, Firefox, Camino) crashes.
Someone can please send me the mp3s?

We just updated the website with info about the waiting list for the introductory run of Level-Ors. Also, some have had issues with the sound clips not working. I can send clips to anyone who is interested. Just email me: ian@blackwatchsound.com and I will shoot a few off to you.

We are going to have a myspace page up soon that should have more samples. I was screwing around with some stereo samples (2 Level-Ors) last night and it was awesome... We're going to try and get some of that stuff up soon as well.

Thanks,

And someone really must release a tape emulator module for the lunchbox!

Any idea of the regular pricing and how long the introductory period will be?

We do not currently have a distributor and are doing this all ourselves. When we get distribution, I think it is likely that the price will increase a little bit. Our introductory run will probably be on the order of 100 units and once they are all spoken for, that is probably it.

Does that answer your question?

THIS LOOKS AWESOME. I cannot wait to run vocals through it! This could save me a lot of time getting just the right amount of griminess on tracks.

About 30% of folks on the wait list have requested 2 units. We've been fooling around with some stereo loops (electronic drums/drum room mics) with two units and it's pretty sweet! We are going to post some more of the clips to our myspace page soon.

Our introductory run is going to be a limited quantity. While we still have quite a few more units available at this moment, at the pace people are signing up, they will all be spoken for quite soon.

Feel free to email us with any questions or to be put on the waiting list: info@standard-audio.com
