Thread Starter | Black Lion Audio MicroClock Press Release ![]() Black Lion Audio High-end Sound at Affordable Cost FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BLACK LION AUDIO ANNOUNCES AFFORDABLY PRICED, HIGH-PERFORMING EXTERNAL WORD CLOCK THE COMPANY - WELL KNOW FOR MODIFYING AND UPGRADING AUDIO-REPRODUCTION EQUIPMENT -- LAUNCHES ITS FIRST MANUFACTURED PRODUCT CHICAGO September 2007 - Black Lion Audio, a leading modifier of professional audio-recording equipment, has announced its first manufactured product, the MicroClock, an affordably priced, stand-alone word clock. The MicroClock is the first reasonably priced solution to an underperforming internal clock Previously, the only solution to an underperforming internal clock was a high-priced external clock crammed with features most users find unnecessary. Now audio engineers have an affordable product that produces professional, high-end sound in a compact chassis. The MicroClock will have an introductory price of $395 through September 2007. The MicroClock is 4” wide 1” high and 3” deep. Thanks to a discrete signal path, the clock produces a clean, low-noise-square wave with no ringing or other artifacts which otherwise hamper the conversion process. The MicroClock works with any interface that has a 75 ohm BNC word-clock input. Units that will benefit range from they entry-level M Box 2 Pro to the more sophisticated Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) HD192. Additional interfaces that clearly benefit from the clock include units from Digidesign and RME. Matt Newport, president of Black Lion Audio, noted that the MicroClock’s higher-quality clocking ensures an optimum conversion process, resulting in a more focused, life-like representation of the audio image with much less phase cancellation. It is capable of driving three 75 ohm BNC cables and generating sampling frequencies from 44.1 kHz on up to 192 kHz. The MicroClock uses discrete class A mosfet inverters to maintain clock signal purity and drive cable loads. Newport noted that the product is an extension of the company’s goal if helping recording studios improve sound quality while holding down costs. This is the first time Black Lion is offering its own audio product. Until now the company has concentrated on designing and performing modifications on preamps and audio interfaces manufactured by other companies such as Digidesign and SM Pro. “Designing our own components is a logical next step for us,” said Newport. “When modifying audio equipment we too often are hampered by poor performing components. Now we can replace problem components with equipment of our own design. “We expect that the clock will be popular with home-studio musicians as well major recording studios where external clocking is required.” As part of its introduction, Black Lion has posted a PDF document on its web site, http://www.blacklionaudio.com/Word_Clock_Myths.pdf, that answers questions about external clocking. Questions covered include: Does external clocking add unnecessary jitter?
