Another question: Will it only require one power supply for all 4 pre's?
Yes, you just need one PSU unit for (4) channels... or for that matter, even (8) channels.

Here's my prototype showing 4 channels powered by a single PSU.

And here's what the 1u rack case will look like!

Yes, and don't forget the cost of PSU.

I'll create a package deal for those purchasing all items at once and give a discount.

I'm no fan of intellectual property, but the germ at least is a new design but, patentable or not, it would be too distasteful for even me to clone that design. The API has been out for decades, and is open season in terms of ripping someone off by selling the design in kits. Ditto for SLL comps, pultecs, Neves, etc.

That said, I like the chassis making an appearance! And yes, the world does need more 512 kits.

Listened to the mp3s provided and this kit seems like something I might want to get soldering on.

Needs a bit more gain. Only 60 dB max. And a stepped gain control or at least some markings would be helpful, too!

Cheers,

Otto

If you go and surf the net and have a look at the schematics out there for various preamps you will find that there are similarities between many of them.

I'd like to see more in the way of compressor kits personally

I'm not sure what you mean... the PSU kit and toroid transformer was available since Day 1.

Price? I have the PSU package deal for $75. Includes the PSU kit, heatsinks, toroid trafo, mounting kit, IEC AC inlet, fuse holder, fuse, switch, panel mount LED.

Thanks for looking.

Sorry, I didn't see it, I found it.

Have you by any chance compared to an Apogee Mini Me? The two sound like they would be similar.

Have you considered making complete single and dual channel packages, complete with casings? The four channel thing is nice, but I don't think I'd try it at more than two, if that much, but I'd like to get everything I need in one shot if possible.

Curious.

Hey Owel,

Just went to your website. Didn't see a price if you bought the whole kit for the 1RU with four pres and everything involved. Is there a package pricing? Are you still considering an eight pre unit?

Also, I see you have the VU meter kits and the Mini IOs. Do you fit those in with everything else? Do you have any photos of that all put together?

Lastly, I wasn't clear on what the different Power Supply Kit voltages were for. Sorry, I've never done any of this before, so I'm just curious what the applications are. I'm considering giving this a go after I get some of the equipment to work on the project.

Thanks!

Finally!

I just want to say ( I'm a little behind in this thread) I finally got my SC1 properly assembled. Man this thing is hot!! I have a friend who has the A-Designs Pacifica and that also is quite a nice pre. I did a comparison and there wasnt too much difference except that the SC1 had a much fuller sound. There was no sibilance yet the it was very clean. It has a wonderfully silky sound, the lows are not boomy the mids are warm and the highs as afore mentioned are very precise without fatiging the listener. It also is very airy on vocals as well. Big ups to the guys at five fish, my friend after hearing the mic pres said that he will purchase four of the four in a single rack. So you are doing something right. The system that I am running:

RME HDSP 9652
2 RME fireface 800's
1 DDX3216
Lucid GENx192
SC1 four pre single rack
Pentium 4 3G prescott
2G DDR
Cubase 4
Waves Mercury
UAD1...

I just need a DIY Compressor now.
