I'm glad to share a preview of the new Audioinstruction DVD: Shane Wilson's Guide to Mixing. The clips feature a discussion between Shane, Russ Long, and Lynn Fuston, regarding the method of printing Shane's final mix.

These are taken from the bonus chapter section of the DVD. Let me apologize in advance for the very low res quality of these clips, (youtube only accepts clips under 17meg )

Cool.

But I totally disagree with the approach. I think each mix should be optimized for whatever medium it's going to -- tape, digital, in the box, to Masterlink, whatever. It's not science, it's art. And in the real world you're going to go for the best sound you can get. Not to mention this scenario gives 1/2-inch tape the advantage.

But I'm usually in the minority in these arguments.

I think they should have monitored off the console and then listen to how much each format changed the mix. Monitoring off tape is really going to change things, not fair for the digital end. At that point it's like, well the tape version sounds more like the mix. That's the format you mixed for and the mix you heard when you were mixing. Am I missing something?

Both valid opinions. In the past, the mix-path-comparison-debate has boiled down into two prevailing camps:

1.) Alter the mix to individually suit each mix path, so that no one path will have an advantage over the other.

2.) Print the same mix through each mix path, so the only variable is the mix path itself.

Now, I should tell you that the purpose of the DVD was to observe Shane working in realtime, without any interference from us. Shane happens to prefer monitoring from the console, only referencing the final mix path at the end. He also happens to prefer mixing to his ATR-102; of course, the addition of the tape machine may have warranted adjustments. If he made any, I'm sure they were small.

We printed the same mix through eight different mix paths. Maybe we should post a couple audio files...stoke the flame a little more!

I will pick this up but not because of the preview clips. Those were hard to watch! The guys I wanted to hear were saying nothing and the guy that was talking, everytime the other guys would offer into the discussion, he would cut them off.

Is the whole DVD like that!

Yeah, I picked up on that as well. I thought it was kind of funny though. I can sense that Lynn Fuston is from the old school of studio-etiquette and teaching practices. There will be no sudden outbursts or raising of the hands. You will more than likely have all of your questions answered during the course of this lecture. So please...

*lol* All jokes aside though, I am looking forward to this DVD. I think I'll go ahead and take advantage of this pre-order discount and save myself a little gas-money.

What you are seeing in these preview clips is NOT the actual main DVD content. You are seeing portions of the bonus material. You will NOT see Lynn Fuston mixing or talking or interrupting on the Shane Wilson portion of the DVD. What you WILL see in the linked clips is a portion where Russ asked me to come in and comment on the methodology which is why I am offering my opinions. If you want to see Shane mix, then buy the DVD and skip the bonus material. That's my suggestion.

I only offer this clarification because I want people to know that these clips do NOT represent what the majority of the DVD contains.

I know my comment sounded pretty harsh, and I apologize if it came off that way but, these clips were solicited as previews of the DVD and if I were using these clips to determine the purchase, I would not buy!

I am excited about the DVD though and will probably purchase.

Right. That's why I want people to know that these are only representative of about 2% of the DVD's contents and should not be taken as an indication of the content of the whole. I've watched the whole three hours and it's good stuff. And I don't interrupt once. On that part, anyway.

Thank you, Lynn, for clarifying that. I found the discussion fascinating, especially taken in context with the main three hour program.

What's really interesting, is to examine the spectrafoo snapshots of each mix printing. The snapshots, included on the data DVD, are a graphical representation of each version. To listen to each mix, while considering the data (freq. response, etc.) is an eye opener for sure.

There would've been little point to include this element, without credible methodology. Lynn very graciously offered his time and expertise on this release, and it's prequel, (S.W. guide to tracking). For that, we are indebted to him.

The interview will probably take on a different meaning after I watch the the main content of the DVD and I will say, "OH, thats why they previewed those clips." At least I hope so.

I've worked with Andy on couple sessions and besides being one heck of a songwriter he is also one of the most versatile session guitarists I've worked with.

I assisted 2 sessions with him early this year in Nashvegas, one an indie singer-songwriter from NJ now based in CA called Dean Guvera and the other Andy's other band, Caedmon's Call whose album 'Overdressed' hits store in August, mixed by none-other than Mr. Wilson.

Chris, well done on the trailer, the DVD looks great. Hope I get to watch it sometime.
