As in the beginning it seems as if the "unprocessed mix" was pretty much already "there" in terms of very basic panning and volume. I would of loved to have seen Shane throw all the faders and panning up at unity, and then start doing the rough balancing himself, and then learning from his volume and panning decisions in context to what sounded right to him for the song unprocessed.

Seeing in how Shane said it's all about working for the song and the artist, and also going on how you guys tracked the song, i would assume the static/producer mix was in fact done by shane himself(again an assumption ) , and i would love to see him touch on that. I could even see it as being an ending chapter to the tracking dvd

As i think a lot of people looking to train their ears sometimes have a hard time knowing where to put things..such as a drum kit, as in how loud the rooms and over heads should be compared to the direct mics and bass etc..and we all know it's all about the song and your ears, but some times learning from hearing and watching others use their ears in action can really help guide that process in the right (or sometimes wrong) direction, and in this case Shanes foundation/direction

Also i must add the Director Commentary track is really the icing on the cake for me, i learned about just as much new information from watching with the commentary on during my second pass, as i did with it off on my first, which i think is awesome...really a wealth of solid information here , and over all this is truly an amazing product.
Thanks for the compliment! That's an interesting observation, about the initial "producer mix" being pretty close from the start. Shane did track that session the day before the mix...so that's his rough. Actually, it's not a "rough-mix" at all; rather, the monitoring mix as they tracked the last bits for the day (background vocals, I believe).

Goal #1 for Shane's mixing DVD was to let Shane work uninterrupted. We felt any scripting would get in the way of Shane's natural inclinations. You are watching the session as it happened, minus a couple asides and/or pauses that weren't worthy of the final cut.

All that to say, I'll keep your suggestion in mind for future projects. We've got some others in the works.

Another BIG fan of the DVDs. I'm actually producing a 4-song demo for a local church band that's going after a David Crowder Band type of sound - a band that Shane has mixed several times (and absolutely phenominal sonics, imho).

Does anyone know the best way to get in touch with Shane and check scheduling & rates?

Thanks,
David Schroder

Edit: I did a little bit of legwork and found out. Shane is managed by Showdown Management in Nashville, contact is Sarah Dean (sarah at showdownmgmt dot com)

You can also reach Shane via MySpace. I believe his user name is wilsonshaned.

New website is up and running, although the banner ad has not been redirected. It's a dead link for the time being.
