Harrison announces affordable, Hi-Def Xrange products

For many years, Harrison has been the worldwide leader in large-format digital post consoles. The "big iron" of the dub stage, our consoles provide the muscle to mix hundreds of channels in high resolution and the utmost in artistic flexibility. Unfortunately the cost and complexity of these systems has limited their availability to the upper strata of facilities. Harrison now offers a native DSP audio solution that provides the features of our flagship digital.engine, but minimizes the cost and footprint. Combined with the economical Trion surface which debuted in 2005, a full-featured Harrison mixing system is now within the reach of any post production facility.

The Xrange consists of 3 new products:

• Xengine: a multi-Opteron, ultra-low-latency DSP engine with 64-bit I/O over gigabit ethernet cable.
• Xrouter: a 1536x1536 audio router with (4) 64-bit Xrange ports, (8) MADI ins, and (8) MADI outs.
• Xdubber: a recorder/workstation, optimized for stem recording and playback in floating-point.

Working "in the box" has become the norm for many facilities. In many ways this can be a good economic decision. However, when deadlines (and tempers) get short, the in-the-box workflow can become a serious impediment. This is why you still see consoles like the Harrison MPC4D on world-class dubbing stages. If you have had to make do with tedious workstation systems because a console solution was deemed impractical for your facility, Harrison has designed the Xrange for you.

Combined with our Trion control surface, the Xrange creates a full-featured audio post production console. A typical system consisting of a 32-fader surface with over 300 touch-sensitive knobs, waveform views over every channel, 144 channels of processing ( each channel having 8 bands of EQ, gate, compressor, direct out, 2 patches, 16 Auxes and 48 main busses ) (96 channels at 96k), a full-featured film monitoring system with Pec/Direct switches, 5 MADI I/O, 64 channels of Pro Tools interconnection, 24 AES I/O, 24 analog I/O, 64-fader control of 2 ProTools workstations, and a 64-channel stem recorder can be had for under $150k.

Is the TRION console modular in the same way as Series 12? Can you change from film monitor to music monitor etc?

Hi Tobias,

The Trion is the successor to the Series 12 (although we still sell the S12 for those who want it). You can get it with a "film" (Pec/Dir paddles) or normal center section. The picture you've posted above has both types installed.

Let me state for the record that this console is made 100% in the USA (OK except for the computers). No outsourcing QC issues here. The switches are rated for 1 million cycles, the same used in our flagship MPC. The fader also comes in 2 different flavors: "very good" and "very good and very expensive".

Digital surround consoles are de rigueur these days, but from the manufacturing side, the demands are...well, demanding. More power, more inputs, more surround program outs- and half the price, naturally. Harrison countered with the Ikis-powered Trion, priced under $150k, and has sold four in Germany and a few more in Taipei over the last couple of months. SSL has renamed the C line to C100 HD and C300 HD

It's a MADI router.... There's AES-MADI, MADI-AD, MADI-DA, MADI-whatever converters out there....
