Great River MP-500NV!

Dan Kennedy signed on yesterday and mentioned that GR's preamp for the 500 form factor is almost completed!

it is supposedly identical, component-wise, to the ME-1NV but with a different power supply.

from this thread:
API, Pacifica, P-1, GR1NV, V78 Pre advice.

!!!!!

This has made my day.

Maybe we can get Dan in here to give us hints on the price tag, when it should be out, and maybe a picture of how it's going to look.

When I bought a 2nv a couple years ago they sent me a coffee mug. :D

Excellent. I hope the EQ-1NV gets converted also.

I was talking to Shaun at Phoenix Audio the other day about doing a 500 series range; he said he'd give it some thought.

that would be awesome! I love love the drs! I bet it would top 1200 for a single channel tho.

I wonder which will show first 500 DRS or the NOVA, hmm....

But yeah, thumbs up to GR.

Well my money would be on the Nova for sure!

We only got onto the topic because I suggested to Shaun that more people might be into his eq if it were in 500 format rather than combined with the pre in Q4 format, because so many people have already got his pre in DRS form.

He's also working on a compressor and said he'd consider making it into 500 format - which could be nice, though if its more of a mix-bus compressor maybe it would be better in horizontal format to sit nicely above an N16.

I would love to see more 500 kits from manufacturers. It would be brilliant if someone could create some universal metal that the hardcore DIY guy could use to create his own 500 modules from scratch (DIY 500 designer kit?). Having the sheet metal and faceplates made for one-off pieces can be expensive. But if that stuff were available to purchase then you could easily get faceplates drilled, finished and engraved/silkscreened from places like Front Panel Express.

Just a random thought...

Brad

Price

Around $750-800 range he is trying to keep the price competitive with other 500 series preamps. Things are just getting better and better for the 500 series format.

Hi guys,

Wow, glad to see the interest.

The circuit boards are done, they've gone thru a couple of revisions in the last few weeks.

The metal work is pretty much done, I've handbuilt a couple, this weekend I'll have the drawings finished up, then a couple of weeks to fabricate.

This is a two space unit, I can't, and won't shave the transformers down without mucking up the sound, and the metering and controls are all exactly the same as they are in the ME-1NV, so it has to take up some room.

I could've switched over to surface mount, and really crammed the components, and done some tranny smashing, but it wouldn't have been an NV, just a low rent down market stab.

For those of you booked at TapeOp, bring your wallets, there will be an extra special show special.

Just kidding.

Dan, I've thought about this a thousand times when someone mentions a 1073 type pre in a 500 format. They always say the transformers won't fit and I think, "Why not a two space unit?"

How will your pre's work power consumption-wise with a rack of assorted pre's from API and A-Designs? I've been told you can't use all 10 in an API 500V if there is a Shadow Hills type pre in the rack. My concern in my application is I'd like to fill out my 500V rack with 10 pre's and use all at the same time to track drums (6 512's or 312's and a couple NV's would be perfect!). I'd hate to be limited to just 6 of the total 8, considering the NV's would take up 4 spaces (not a concern). If it's not possible, and with all of the interest in the 5oo form factor, I'd consider getting another API 500V. Thanks in advance for your comments and I appreciate your commitment to excellence.

lol
After a second look, i too thought that "<3" looked like a set of balls.

Dan, If i was to install 2 of these into my six space API box will there be enough juice to run my API and P1 at the same time?

Plenty of juice.

I have a 6 space rack here, an API 312 and Tim's Elixer and two MP-500NV's, they all play quite well together.

The NV meets the VPR specs, I just haven't filled out the paperwork.
