Thread Starter | Wait for Pro Tools 11?
Hey there,
I have to buy a private copy of Pro Tools soon (again).
Will it be wise to wait for a-maybe-PT11?
If I have a look at the release dates for the older versions, there will be maybe a new version soon...with one year "delay"? Quote: |

Plenty of rumours..zero facts. I'd say 1-2 months nothing's going to happen - they're still ironing out PT10 bugs! I'd go for 10 now to be honest.

Okay, I'd go with PT10 next week.
Anyone knows, if my CPTK from version 8 will work with version 10?

Yes. And you don't need to install anything. The CPTK Ilok license will unlock the extra features.
In fact, you should uninstall the CPTK item that's currently installed now.

If you wait for the latest and greatest, you're going to be waiting forever. Just get what's available now and enjoy it.

PT 7.3 was 2006 Pro tools 8 came out in 2008 v9 was 2010 , v10 was 2011
I think the quick release of V10 was the exception rather than the rule.

In all seriousness, Pro Tools is still a Carbon app on the Mac. Apple thumbed its nose at 64-bit Carbon a while back. So Avid is, as far as I can tell, going to have to rewrite the Pro Tools app from scratch for the Mac, and since the Mac seems to be the lead platform I think you won't see PT11 at all until the Mac version is rewritten.
Through the benefit of hindsight and a little bit of guesswork, I think you can tell what Avid's long-term plan is:
PT9 - set the hardware free.
PT10 - lay the foundation for 64-bit while extracting money from people: create AAX platform, which will have to be 64-bit compatible, and charge $300 for the privilege while supporting RTAS, which are 32-bit plugins only
PT11 - all AAX, all the time, and 64-bit - and the only way to get that is with the rewritten app. No more RTAS, so hopefully for the pro shops (and hopefully for Avid) Waves has decided to quit horsing around and get with the program.
I think you might see it in the fall of 2013 at the soonest. But, unlike PT10, I think it might be worth it. But if you need to work between now and then, you need to buy PT10 I'm guessing.

I'm half expecting Avid will release it in the next week or 2.

NAB and Messe overlap a little this year - the announcement will be at NAB but I'm sure Avid will have whatever they're revealing ready to go on display at Messe as well.

they are coming out with a box that does everything ... but, you can only rent the thing you want to use that day ... and if you get caught with your hand still inside the box, (this is the copy protection), when the time runs out it hacks it off ... and you are free to rent again tomorrow if you like ... they even give you a 50% discount off on Pianos lessons ...
who knows, but it will be Ground Breaking ...
