HDX Questions

I am looking to upgrade my DAW system to a pro tools system, but the HDX is confusing me. Would I be able to use converters besides the avid ones? And, could I use a third party controller (ssl matrix, aws, etc.) with PT10 HD?
Thanks

I think technically you could use other converters to connect to the card, but they aren't avid supported. companies like apogee and aurora have converters that are seen by pro tools as a 192 -- this has to do with those companies reverse engineering them to work that way.

it's only a matter of time IMO before we will start seeing third party manufacturers claiming support, but the card is still relatively new.

I am using the HD native card with PT 10 HD, and while apogee doesn't support PT 10 yet, it's working fine.

The Lynx Aurora with the HD adapter seems to work fine also.

I think Google has a pretty good list. Try "pro tools hd compatible converter" -that should work...

I was thinking about using 2 Prism ADA-8XRs for conversion. Anyone know how I might go about doing that?

PT HDX can work with any converter that offers ADAT (48k) or AES/EBU (up to 192k) connections . Each I/O Digital interface will give you 16 i/o of either format.

Can you tell me what cables I'll need to connect the Prism Converter to the protools HDX card?

The Prism has an expansion slot for their Pro Tools HD i/o module. You would want to check with Prism to make sure it's compatible with PT10 and HDX.

i can confirm that the Lynx Aurora works right away with the HDX card over the digilink to mini-digilink cable.

but, you can´t buy the hdx-card alone, so at least you need to buy the avid hd io digital.

in this case you don´t necessarily need your 3rd party converter to have a digilink connection. adat and aes/ebu works perfectly.

My AD-16X don't work with HDX - they are now boat anchors.
Apogee says they are working on a fix but I could not wait and replaced them with Avid 16X16's
I had 2 Aurora's but one I used the new Avid's I sold them off.

Boat anchors that also do excellent AD conversion, and which may work with HDX in the near future. Landlubber!

I'm slightly concerned by your ability to want to spend (some would argue overspend, given the performance of the new avid IOs compared to the prisms in reverent blind tests), married to your seeming lack of knowledge on anything pt related, plus inability to look for things on google!

Prism and Avid both have websites....

as i recently ran into this problem, just a tip for HD3 users.

HD3 has 96 of i/o

the new rival or "more powerful successor" to HD3 is HDX. BUT HDX only got 64 of i/o.

HD3 can take 3 lynx aurora 16 with all analog and digital i/o.

HDX just can take 2!

so for those using more than 64 channels, you need HDX2. think twice if you really need to upgrade.

True...although with HDX, assuming you don't need 32 channels of digital io, you can connect the 3rd aurora via aes, to give you 48 analogue io plus 16 digital io. Add a 4th aurora for 64 analogue io.

Unless you really need 32 digital io, you don't need HDX2.

This won't be a bottleneck for most. A lot of large studios have 24in/48 out systems.
