Thread Starter | Create a separate user for PT Windows?
Hi, I'm about to install PT10/Win [native] and wondering if its preferable to create a separate user that would have all the PT optimizations, use my interface instead of the onboard sound, and so on. In other words, I would have two users, one who cruises around the web and does all kinds of non-music stuff, and a second user who does nothing but uses PT using a "profile" custom-tailored to PT's many needs and wants including using my interface. I'm wondering: Just how much control can one user have over what services load? Is this idea smart or am I overthinking? If you have a separate user, what sort of things do you control I'm probably overlooking as a newb? And so on . . . |

Yes, it's a good idea, if you need to use the same machine for personal / everyday computing. I don't, I have a dedicated computer in the studio, which is the best way to go about it, if you can. Better than a separate Windows Profile is a dual-boot setup. A bit more involved to set up, but more bullet-proof in the long run. If you set up the system properly ProTools will run like a champ on a wintel box, in fact even better than on a Mac in my experience. I've seen more crashes and hangs on HD rigs in studios running them in Macs than I ever get on mine. She is solid as a rock, can't crach ProTools, literally can't.

I'm with you as far as PT10/Win native being underrated as a stable DAW platform -- provided you get the Windows system details right. Now I haven't heard of or considered a dual boot into the same operating system. I had a perfectly behave Linux/Windows laptop, but haven't heard of two Windows installs on the same PC. |

I use a single user for all purposes. I never have any issues... PS: But I do have a fair knowledge of Windows YMMV... Alistair
