No, the PT10 files are now .ptx so you can't open them. You can, however, save a file as the older format when you are in PT10 so that it is compatible. The main reason they moved to a new file format is because in 10 they did away with fade and gain files, so if you want to open a PT10 file with version 9 or earlier, those files need to be generated.

Just to clarify so if you you get a file that's in say 9. Can you open it or con.vert it to 10 , work on it And put in the real time fades then save it back to 9 . Will the fade files then be in the 9 version ?

Ok I actually just ran across this youtube clip that talks about this so it looks like fades are converted back and forth but clip gain is not, you would have to render clip gain but it looks doable. Of course this the sales pitch at AES so it will nice to hear if people are actually doing this and how reliable it is.

Warning - found a bug in this.

I converted a bunch of 10 sessions back to 9. All were fine, bar one where the only difference was it had x-formed audio in it. The x-forming got totally corrupted, plus a load of tracks lost their audio regions - the tracks were still there, but the regions and audio files had been removed (the files were still on disk).

I can only conclude that there's some bug in the zpx-forming, this was literally the only difference.

*sigh* Really? .ptx?

After we just had to deal with the .ptf/.pts thing a few years ago with the 6->7 transition?

Now groups are going to buy new 003s/MBoxes with the new PT10 software and bring in scratch takes or send me sessions to mix are I'm not going to be able to be open them on one of the two PT.8 HD 3 Accel rigs at the place I work out of? Thanks Avid for embarrassing me and making it look like I work out a second-rate facility when I can't open other PT sessions recorded on $200 rigs.

Thats a load of crap.

And the solution is to spend my time on the phone like an unpaid tech support guy walking the bands through the "Save Copy" dialogues?

And I suppose this will also force WAVES upgrades ect...

I'm a big fan of Digidesign (oops.. I guess I mean Avid now) and I'm a die-hard ProTools guy but moves like this are beyond frustrating.

(snip) misread you

EDIT: Ok, now that I am awake, and read your post again,

Don't cha think you owe it to your clients to update your system?

Not trying to be a scum bag here, but if you have a huge struggle with this, and you cannot find your way around it, then I think upgrading your system is the answer, so that you can be compatible to previous and current pro tools session files.

Seems as if, it would be worth the money, for your clients success.

Or do it the old fashion way and educate them on the work around process,

OR

just put your foot down and tell them how you want the work. Export the Audio and Click Track. Done.

Its pretty easy, for "scratch" material anyway.

In my world, it takes no time to explain these things over the phone.

I guess a standalone conversion utility would be useful to guys in your position, but attitudes like yours are directly in contradiction to those calling for more features and 64bit support.

Having spent 4 days tracking on pt10, and today coming back to 8, the improvement is huge, with respect to performance and speed. I have to say I for one am glad of the improvements, even if they're frustrating occasionally.

If you can't or don't want to drop the cash upgrading your HD system to 10, why not just keep a copy of "LE" 10 around and go through the legacy routine yourself?
