Starting to make chillwave/glofi/dreamy synth music

Hey, just moved this from another part of the forum as I posted in the wrong area.

Basically I have been listening to a lot of chillwave/glofi music recently (in particular Washed Out's newest album 'Within and Without'. I am really trying to get into the genre as an artist and have so much passion for the sound.

The only problem is I seem to be doubting whether I am getting anywhere close to a good sound. I am currently listening to Toro Y Moi, Washed out, caribou, bonobo, com truise, neon indian, gold panda and Tycho.

heres a sample of some stuff I came up with just to practice my production techniques. I just want good, honest opinions about the sound and melodies.

thanks in advance!

pretty good stuff. i'm diggin' the second track a lot, but the first one is legit too. i don't really have any complaints, to be honest.

i've also been getting into chillwave/glo-fi (horrible genre name) and started fooling around... i'm not nearly on your level yet though :/ keep it up!

you are definitely on the right track.
my only suggestion would be that you need more atmosphere (maybe long sidechained reverbs) and pads to flesh out the sound. basically, it doesn't sound busy enough.
you have a good foundation with which to work.

More bass mate!! nothings coming through on my HS80's.Try reference these against a tune in the style that you are going for and find a better balance.

Otherwise I like the sounds and I dig the vibe, keep it up!

How did you get the heavy verb piano type sound that is panned right on the second track? I'm a huge fan of the second one. Hoping to hear more soon.

Great work! That first one really makes me want to get down and dance. The second track is cool too, but I think that the intro is a bit dry. Keep it up!

I know my modular Virus synth inside out which you don't even think is modular in nature. Sorry if you can't accept that i do know it well and that it is certainly modular.

I like what you are working on...technique can always get better the more we know but I like your melodies. Definitely try some of someminornoise's recommendations. I'm into much of the same type of music if you haven't checked Chad Valley and BrotherTiger yet give them a try too. I think BrotherTiger is pretty much using Reason but I'm not positive about that.

great stuff man, and props on getting on majestic! their channel always has great sounds. I was wondering if you might offer any insight into your approach to production. software/instruments/techniques etc. I've been working on hip-hop beats with ableton lately but feel myself pulled towards other electronic genre more and after jamming to this today, Toro y Moi - So Many Details , I stumbled onto this thread. Right now I'm much more feeling this as a direction for my musical work.

New one ^

I use ableton, arturia minimoog, a bunch of vintage drum machine samples, NI Massive, a piano, guitar, tape machine, my own voice to make some sounds I struggle creating with samples I have. I absolutely ****ing love hip-hop, chillwave, ambient music - and I try to incorporate elements of everything, of which has only really made sense recently I think. Would love to hear what you create.

I really dig your stuff! I tend to do similar "chillwave"-oriented beats, so if you guys have some time to give it a listen...
