Funny, I never really gave a crap about cars until I became an FX editor. I had to start learning these things. It's funny how we start paying attention to detail and have to learn specifics about cars, birds, guns, and all sorts of things. Before I started cutting FX, I couldn't tell you what a musket or a Glock 18 sounds like. Now I have to.

I suppose production sound wouldn't be too far off-topic. More communication between production and post is always a good thing. This is especially true since our workflows are evolving along with newer media and technology i.e. 24p, HD, BWF files, etc.

As you probably know, there's also the Remote Possibilities forum here as well as the Google Groups R.A.M.P.S for non-post related specific production sound discussion.

as great as Jay's and Geo's list are, i am inclined to believe that we will be dealing with more 'budget' conscious post here. meaning DV : FCP or Premier or Video Toast (HA!) --> Pro Tools or Nuendo or Logic to DVD or Digibeta as opposed to Double-system Deva's and Cantars with 35MM or HD (double-system) ---> team of 15 or more people and a Harrison Console with 3 mixers and Dolby PM then SDDS then DTS...to international distribution.

all should be welcome, i am just saying that chances are that the traffic here would not be the block-buster sound crew. ...most post is high-end corporate, commercial, or independent film... the high-end pro film guys have people like 'doc' and 'coach' and 'funkcity' and 'sneezy' and 'sleepy'.

oh, and Concert DVD mixing and encoding. Surround mixing.

Yeah, a Surround forum would be great! Not only as to film, but also about music, like, say, surround miking techniques and so on.

Great idea! Most post mixers I've worked with are musicians as well...we are very very slutty

If anything at least there'd be a place online to come and bitch about how nobody ever budgets for sound in television, or how many first time filmmakers think the camera mic will be fine for production sound, or how an actress who looks great on screen suddenly becomes one big bag of ugly when trying to get her to loop her lines in the VO booth or...

That's a subject I'd definitely contribute to. It's a major part of our business. We're one of not many companies who offer wraparound services, from hi-def video & audio truck to SSL G+ mix studio to mastering to video editing and DVD authoring. Some recent jobs include Alice in Chains, Seether, Killswitch Engage, The Pixies, O.A.R, Interpol, New Order, Oasis, and Gnarls Barkley.

We could discuss the whole production chain, not just the post. Much of the info would be appropriate to Steve Remote's forum, but we could touch on how the remote affects our later post. Still, I think the post forum would deal mostly with non-music oriented post, as between Steve's forum and the regular music-oriented ones, concert video threads already have a home.

YES YES YES

I like to think of myself as a producer, but what pays (most of) the bills is my TV/commercial work.. Am i a G slut?? NO doubt, I have my own project studio and love gear, and i think a lot of people on this forum are in the same situation.. regardless if Post people are as slutty as the rest of "us", i think the benefit would be great for a lot of us, especially people like me that are involved in all aspects of sound production, where "post" is another step in the process to deliver the final product..

Hope it happens.

and a happy belated New Years to all

bump!

As I'm knee-deep in composition/cue-writing/mixdown stages on an indie video these past few weeks, I'd way rather drop in to see a new "post-prod/film/TV forum" than:

a) "what killer mic for under $50 dollars"

b) "Dre stole Timba's beatz y'all"

c) "do you think my ass is fat?"

Just a thought!
