Why is there no post-production film/TV forum?

Just curious. Why is there no forum here at GS for post-production film/TV/multimedia? We're pretty slutty too. I suppose some aspects are covered in the "Remote Possibilities" forum, but that is predominately on the music end of things. Currently, the best forum for post-production sound discussion is the Digidesign User Conference, but it would be nice to have a good non-brand-specific forum to discuss sound editing, sound design, surround mixing, mics, preamps, room calibration, TV deliverables, etc. My vote would be for Tom Hambleton (Minister) to moderate.

In my experience, and mine only, I've found the majority of post engineers (in my experience) aren't very gear slutty unless they also dabble in music. Post (in my experience) seems very driven by transparency as opposed to music production which (in my experience) seems more driven by the color individual pieces bring to the sonics. I'm yet to meet a post engineer who (in my experience) lusts after a 1073 to record vintage voice overs etc, so maybe there are more hanging on production sites and the digi site than there are here. This isn't a comment on all post engineers, just my experiences.
Cheers

Yeah....how come?

Post video/film often means up-front presence within very narrow parameters.
Every trick and nuance shared is appreciated.
Color my butt...we just gotta hear it!

I think it's a great idea. As a someone who has worn many hats in the area of video production/post production, I think that audio is often overlooked or not considered to be that important to the overall television production. When striving for quality in television, audio should not take second place. I would like to hear some ideas on how other video producers are solving audio problems as they relate to their video productions.

I was thinking about asking the same thing. There has to be quite a few of us here that do post-related work in addition to music. I would love to see it under the Gearslutz umbrella.

Umm, I actually do lust after a U47, because it "sounds like me." An L47 is more realistic price-wise, but not this year.

I'm also still lusting after (and negotiating a price on) this old piece o'crap.

I already "voted" on the other thread last summer, but another one can't hurt:

Possible topics: Consoles (Harrison MPC!). Which projector for HD? Should you invest in a DMU? Sync and related toys. New workflows for production in HD. Outboard vs. ITB. LEQ(m). Formats (SR-D, DTS, SDDS etc.). ADR techniques. Foley techniques. Plenty of mix issues. Monitoring - JBL cinema speakers vs. more "hi-fi" music oriented monitors found in some smaller rooms. X-curves and beyond. Large room vs. small room. Reference levels. Remixing for DVD. Restoration. Hard disk vs. tape video playback. Film projection and bi-phase. HD delivery to theaters. Multi-man vs. single man crews. Printmastering machines - will digi ever get it right and knock out the MMRs?

I could keep going on and on... There are plenty of topics, and some post engineers around, but GS is more weighted toward music, and I'm not sure there'd be enough people to keep it going. This has come up a couple times before. I'd participate if one were started, but I'm not sure of the viability. Perhaps we should get a Hollywood post industry guest moderator for a month and see how the traffic is?

What are the JBL monitors you mention Jay?

I'd LOVE to see a post section.

Is there anything on the web now that covers post? I've seen the cinema audio society --- kinda thin.

Its been asked for before. I was reluctant in the past as my own knowledge of that field is scant but I am and more open minded now..

Jay's suggestion of a post expert guest for some Q&A - is a good one, lets see if we can try that in 2007 and see if there is enough interest to carry forward with... perhaps it wil start with a bang! (or someone hitting a table top with a hammer mic'ed up with a U87 going into a Neve 1073 into Pyramix )

Currently, the best forum for post is the Digidesign User Conference. Of course, it leans heavy towards being Pro Tools-specific but almost all aspects from production to editorial to mix to printmaster and beyond are often discussed there. The forum is called Post & Surround.

The DUC

I think it would be great to have a post forum here at GS that is beholden to no manufacturer and would foster the sharing of information on all things post. This exchange is especially important these days with the movement toward tapeless file-based workflows and high-definition formats.
