Definition of "POST"

I know this is a basic question, but I was wondering (specifically) what people mean when they say that they work in "post"? Does this mean all non-music related audio? Does it have to do with sync-to-picture? How about guys mixing radio spots... is that considered post? Also, I always hear people say that there is more money in post. Is this true?

Thanks for the clarification!

Whenever I use the word "post" it usually refers to myself, as in "dumb as a..."

Whats post?

I have been doing commercial jingles for fifteen years and post is the final stage before it goes to tv.
At this point [ post ]all of the video editing should in theory be done, voiceover sweetening and music get combined for the final product , the jingle and that goes out to the stations.

"Post" generally refers to what audio (although film/video has a "post" stage as well) go thru after the initial production (on location & stage) filming for TV / Films. It covers a broad range of diciplines. Some aspects of Audio Post would entail:

Dialog Editing & cleanup
SFX design & cutting
Foley
ADR (Dialog replacement)
Music Scoring & Mixing
Music Editing
Dubbing (mixing the entire soundtrack - music, fx, dialog, foley, etc. in a theater sized studio.)

All (mostly) done in syncronization to picture. And it all gets really interesting as it goes back and forth between film and video and the syncronization anomolies that that process incurs.

I guess that you could say that all audio other than what is raw recorded as the actors "act" falls under the broad definition of audio post.

About 99% of what I do is radio, and when I'm talking to a salesguy at GC or Sweetwater or whatever, I call it "post" so they'll kinda know what I'm about.

In terms of the client culture (ad & promo people) radio's the same as TV, so in that sense it's all "post."
