Template Suggestions/Tips

Making a new Pro tools template for Film and 5.1 mixing. After I finish this I want to adapt to for Stereo use, so I want to make sure I make it perfect the first time.

I've been messing with it for about a week. It seems fully vetted at this point but surely there is something I can throw in to speed things up that I'm not thinking of.

Please throw in any suggestions you may have. Hope this makes sense

So far it consists of:

General
Each Track has essential plugins already inserted (Channelstrips, De-esser, L2007, Waverider, WNS , W43, UM226, etc...) some disabled to prevent CPU usage until needed. All tracks also have sends to several reverbs ( TLSpace, Revibe, Reverb One) already in place. All automation parameters are enabled and initial baseline setting have been written to all.

Dialogue:
2 Dx Groups, 4 tracks each + 1 ADR each
2 mono DX Auxes (with Waves WNS)
Mono, Stereo and 5.1 Dx Reverbs
5.1 Dx Aux.
Dx VCA (controlling only 2 mono auxes to prevent screwing up threshold of WNS)

VO:
2 mono Vo tracks
Mono VO aux
VO VCA

Sound Effects:
4 Mono foley Tracks
4 Stereo BG tracks (with upmixer instered) + 5.1 BG track
FX group A- 2 mono, 2 stereo
FX Group B - 2mono, 2 stereo
mono, stereo, 5.1 reverbs
5.1 Fx Aux
Seperate VCA control for BG, Foley, FxA and FxB

Music:
2 stereo music
2 stereo music with Umpixer inserted
Stereo, 5.1 Reverbs
Mx VCA

Dx, Fx, Mx, VO Subs feed 5.1 Full Mix Aux, Mix Minus, M&E all well as individual stems.

Tracks to Print:
Full Mix 5.1
Mix Minus 5.1
M&E 5.1
Dx 5.1
Fx 5.1
Mx 5.1
LtRt

Markers & Window configurations:
Setup tons of Markers with custom window configurations to allow quick access to things like:
VCA groups
breakouts of vca groups
Automation of key RTAS/AAX plugins on Dx Auxes (WNS, EQ)
Frequently used audiosuite (RX2)
Wide/Narrow Channel view
Track heights
Edit groups to conform sessions

Hmm....This probably reads like some kinda cluster!@#

What would you guys do?

Looks great, but in my own experience, my templates are constantly being updated, improved, and tweaked. If you ever make a perfect one, let us know!

As far as adapting for stereo, that's tough. I have separate stereo and surround templates. Not sure how to unify that easily.

No kidding. Trying to incorporate as many time saving features as possible.

As far as adapting to to Stereo... Not sure how well it will work exactly just yet. Start a new session with Stereo I/O. Import Session Data and redo the bussing structure . Replace 5.1 Auxes and tracks. We will see.

I've just started using the Stereo buss inside the 5.1 busses.
So often going from what was supposed to be 'just a Stereo mix needed" into the 5.1 that is part of almost all Delieverables made me begin to just always use my 5.1 templates from the beginning.

I'm curious about your ADR tracks inside of each the 2 Dialog Groups. I keep the ADR in it's own Group.

Also I often have a 'Loop Group' or Crowds group.
The Pfx I keep in their own group.

NReichman - has it right imo. You'll always adjust. The more time you spend over-thinking it, the less value you get from time saved. I see it all the time with DAM systems. People want to be so organized, they over-think the layout and automation. Especially the automation. It looks good on paper, until you realize the workforce needed to keep it going, and how different projects sometimes have completely different workflows.

PT 10 makes it pretty easy to update your template at the end of a session with the exclude media feature. I would think, after a few sessions, if you start noticing a bottleneck, change it.

Your template looks like a fine start to me.

I think you guys are right, I'm over thinking it.

I'm calling the 5.1 template done. Started to redo it in stereo and it only took about a half hour to replace the 5.1 template channels with stereo channels and redo the routing.

Unfortunately my markers didn't exactly make it. They were really the key to making this an efficient template. Trying to emulate some ICON type workflow - on a Command 8 lol. The names show up in the marker list and some of the settings and window configurations stuck but all of my show/hide tracks disappeared. Another half hour will fix that.
