I am now having a real problem with shows not deciding which category they belong in.
Now we have Game of Thrones in both long and short form.
AndI see American Hortor story entered in short form, whereas in the Emmys nd CAS awards they entered in mini-series/mow's.

WTF?

How is Skyfall in for Dialogue editing? I thought a lot of that dialog sounded horrid.

I saw it twice in two different theatres - perhaps it was the sound in those theatres. I have had a lot of really horrible experiences with sound in theatres in the Toronto area lately. Between totally dead speakers (in 3 cases the L screen speaker, totally ruined the experiences), poorly sound proofed rooms, playback being WAY too loud (Zero Dark Thirty) that half of the sound was incomprehensible and just all around poor sounding theatres, it wouldn't surprise me.

I've ruled out around half of the theatres in my area and the worst part is none of them care enough to do anything about it, particularly the two theatres I experienced the dead speakers. I first saw Skyfall in Peterborough, ON and complained after about the dead speaker, was assured it would be fixed ASAP, then returned two weekends ago to see Django and it was still dead. Then saw Django a second time in a theatre in Toronto and experienced the exact same problem. Unlucky.

Maybe the theatre had very bright speakers, or no x curve.

These awards are for sound editorial, not sound mixing. If it was too low, it would not have anything to do with the dialog editorial necessarily.

Daniel Craig's dial was noisy and rustley but that's probably cos he whispers every line.

It's a good party. I had the priviledge to be nominated a few years ago and had blast there. Met a bunch of cool people, got a bit drunk and yeah, it was good

It only adds weight to the often held belief that some nominations and awards are not merited when the ADR on 'Skyfall' is nominated for the MPSE's. Credibility and credulity fly out of the window.

Erik, I apologise for appearing to be a doom monger! I would like to redress the balance and say that the vast majority of the nominations are thoroughly deserved and, quite rightly, you should be very happy.

First of all...

Congrats to all of the nominees!

There's something conspicuously missing in the feature film categories, and I think I know the reason why.

And that is all I am going to say about that.

I also think there's one missing but I don't know the reason why.

I'm a bit late but Congratulations to all of the nominees!

I don't have the chance to know you personally but I know it takes tons of talent, work and passion to make it that far in the audio industry.

Well done!

Not to discount anything that was nominated, I'm sure they all deserve it (haven't watched them all myself), but I'd be curious what people thought was missing from the nominations. For myself, I really liked the sound of The Hunger Games, both the sound editorial and the mix.

Maybe Tom was referring to Zero Dark Thirty which is nominated for an Oscar but not a Golden Reel?

That's interesting. In contrast, The Hurt Locker won for almost every award for sound except the MPSE, even though it was nominated. I guess sound editors don't like those movies (or the people involved)…

thanks Danjel! the category I was in was pretty hotly contested, with Craig Hennigan and his team having done excellent work on H+ as well- the odd thing is that both H+ and Halo - Forward unto Dawn were directed by Stewart Hendler.... I frankly had no expectation of seeing our show winning- as the nomination was really a great validation for the work.

it was an impressive evening, and I am sure the feature division was very hotly contested, and we saw a ton of great films not even nominated. most notably Flight and (though its a tiny bit shameless) Total Recall, which I thought sounded pretty good as far as effects went....

And we got thrown out...
The Swedish prod co. could not find an agreement with Harvey weinberger so ended up with no US distribution at all. Schmucks! Would have loved to have been there.
Congrats to all the winners!
