Yeah - saw this. Not sure how I feel about it; it seems that everything is owned by some large corp. Of course that is an exaggeration, but it's just how it seems nowadays. That said, I guess it better that Lucas pass the buck to someone capable, as opposed to just letting Lucasfilm die with him.
Wonder what will happen to Skywalker Sound, and it's employees....after the Sound One debacle, I would be worried long term, if not short term.
Cheers.

| Breaking news from lucas films...
FROM THE WWW.
Disney is buying Lucasfilm, the company behind the Star Wars films, from its chairman and founder George Lucas for $4.05bn
In a statement announcing the purchase, Disney said it planned to release new film Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015.
That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years, the company said.
The last Star Wars film was 2005's Revenge of the Sith, and Disney said it believed there was "substantial pent up demand".
I guess this is old news now...

The Star Wars Franchise continues to go downhill. Next we'll see them buy the rights to the James Cameron productions and make a cartoon series out of Avatar... |

Cheers. | I agree.
I can see Skywalker Sound going away.
As Disney is all about the bottom lime, and profit margins.

I dunno. Kathleen Kennedy is still in charge AND if they are gonna make more Star Wars movies they need at least SOME of Skysound.

This is also sort of historic--the final passing of the whole Lucas/Coppola/Korty et al "rebel outside of Hollywood" era.

I'm not too upset about this although I would have preferred to see a darker approach to Star Wars

I guess this is old news now... | Yikes more star wars films - we definitely need more - i must know what happened to the ewoks! That story alone deserves a trilogy. It will be good to see the original cast back. I've heard Ep 7 starts with a full on balls to the wall argument about a trade embargo in the space senate - hold on to your hats!

philp | Exactly.
And with him not there to support it, I can see the whole complex going bye bye.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the entire Skywalker sound complex being a money losing venture, simply because of the maintenance of the huge property.

The music recording side might stay, since that ended up kind of separate from the film biz, but it's a BIG property to maintain just for that....

philp | To be honest though, I'm not sure there's much else you could do with that property. Considering the strength of the local neighborhoods who want nothing to do with further development, I'd be really wary of trying to develop anything at all on Lucas Valley Road.

philp | Given the state of the music industry, that's even less of an incentive.

Just FYI. Tour Of Skywalker Rancher - Business Insider
George still owns the land. So Disney does not have to maintain it. Skywalker Sound is a part of Lucasfilm and I am sure he and Kathleen have every intention of keeping the sound in Skywalker Ranch.

This is a good thing.
Disney owns Marvel.
Marvel has largely been left alone to do their work.
I imagine it'll be the same with LucasFilms/Sound.

I've always thought of Skywalker Sound the way Michael Jackson did Neverland Ranch: a magical kingdom where all your dreams come true. Too bad I gave away my last 4.5 billion last week otherwise I would have entertained the purchase.
(I feel like a five year old going for ice cream knowing another Star Wars trilogy is due...)

Interesting how many of the captions are wrong.
Yoda is at the Presidio, not at Skywalker Ranch.... Quote:

When Liberty Media bought Sound One (packaged with Todd AO), they (technically Ascent Media) left us alone for the first couple of years or so. We were still doing great - busy as all hell. When things started to slow down, we were no longer left alone.
Generally speaking - when a bigger company buys a smaller one, they leave it alone as long as it does well and meets expectations. But when there is a slow period - even normal seasonal ones - they tend to not leave it alone anymore.

George will just pay for everything?
Disney is not know for its philanthropic attitude towards business.
If its not making money. It will be gone.
Hell, George shutdown the whole sprockets division at one point himself. I know, because it happened just before I was to be hired there.

So, anybody thinking they will hold on to the ranch from warm fuzziness of their heart, has another think coming.
It would be interesting to see how much it really costs to run the place.
My guess is, that its not a profit making venture. But more of A big pet project for George. One I think e has grown tired of, and tired of footing the bill.
