Apologies whitecat, I was referring to music. Doh!
I might pull the trigger on one as soon as apple renders my old Mac pro obsolete...

I didn't succeed downloading the files from the server (cyberduck, filezilla, none of them worked for me) and now I guess they're offline. This could be the best solution then. Could you send me your adress? Thank you very much for this.

Thank you, Mark, but still no luck. After a while the connection drops and the resume function of cyberduck and filezilla doesn't work or work just once. I even asked for a friend to try download himself and he is facing the same problem.

I support so much everything that Henchman said!
I read these posts, and with everything you wrote supporting this model I agree.
I have this same mini with the same config and I did the downgrade thing and all... mini is really really nice.
I did lots of research before getting it and can't be happier with mine I truly recommend it

This is not possible on the new 2012 server though.
I actually prefer the 2011 over the 2012 version, as it has the dual 7200 rpm drives.
And if you want to use HD cards, there are several thunderbolt chassis availabel that are cheaper than the old expansion chassis.
And of course there is always the native thunderbolt interface from Avid now.
Oh, and it only cost $70 to upgrade to 16 gigs of RAM. | yep interested
please the (apple) name of the mac-mini
and the procedure to put Snow Leopard on there?
thanks!

Look for a used one. The price is dropping considerably.

Apple has now dropped the price of the refurb versions of the 2011 MMS to $759 on their website.
This is probably because you can now get a 2012 Mac Mini quad core 2.3 I7 for $800 new . Plus for $100 extra you can upgrade it to 2.6ghz processor.
It won't have the dual 7200 500 GB drives but it does come with a 1TB 5400 that is supposedly not as doggy as people would think.
The New Mac Mini Server is now a Quad core 2.3 I7 with 2 1 Terrabyte drives.
One of these bad boy is own my short list in the next month here. As its time to upgrade the studio machine.

I still would prefer the dual 7200 rpm drives though.

My 2011 Mini server is a workhorse so far. Dual 7200s and 16gig of RAM from macsales.
I've been doing post on a project with 92 track at 48/24 from the second HDD and playing 1080 vid over FW800. No hiccups at all. Cubase 6.5 64bit, FabFilter/Softube/Izotope plugs running VST3.

I've heard (not tried) that the mini supports hdmi 1.4 and so you can use discrete 5.1 audio over hdmi. If your replay system is good enough you really don't need a audio interface. And you can of course run the video over hdmi as well.

That said, I still need a couple high-quality inputs here for various reasons including VO, ADR etc... and I wouldn't trust the 'audio in' on the Mac for that at all!

Sorry for the confusion on my part.

Great thread and information. I am definitely considering going the 2011 mac mini route.
Question: Just so I understand if I buy it stock I can still install software like Pro Tools, Nuendo, etc. I don't have to download the DMG file that was posted by Henchmen?
Thanks
Nicole
