Starting a small Editing/ADR studio. Gear recommendations?

Hey all

Im looking for some advice/gear recommendations from yourselves..

Myself and a friend are intending on setting up a small ADR/Editing business at somepoint. We doing our research and are looking for recommendations from some people who are doing a similar thing.

At the moment we think we need:

1x microphone (u87?)
1x soundcard (orpheous?)
1x high spec MacPro

HQ 5.1 surround setup

Acoustics treatment

1x video monitor for vocal both

DAW Software for recording ADR (Protools HD 9?)

Thoughts?

Cheers!

Gary

You don't use the server software. It's all about the quadcore i7 and dual internal 7200rpm drives. I am just finishing setting mine up today. Downgrading the OS to Snow Leopard.

ADR

Also, forget the U87 and get a 416 for ADR
Rent a U87 if someone really needs it, or buy an Advanced Audio knockoff and save $1800.
Lose the 5.1 set up and get a pair of very good near fields,
As far as an interface, you can get an MBox pro for $300 on ebay if you dig.
Keep it simple and get this stuff paid for in your first year, become profitable and then build on that.

don't need the 5.1 for ADR.

We own two ADR/VO studios - one used HD9 and one uses Sadie. For this work I really like Sadie.

Get TWO miss as well. Also get TWO interfaces and TWO macs. Why? Redundancy - when things break and you have a client.... ouch!! At least get two mic's.

Have you tried this Advanced Audio knockoff?

Get a good room. If the room sucks, it won't matter what kind of equipment you have.

I have, well, the U47fet copy and I sold a U87ai the next week. I did a test with both mics side by side with a U67 as well, I am no George Martin but my voice over making ear said, this sounds damn good. So off I went. You can hear it on a few national ads running in the US right now. I can't say who, but it sounds AOK on air. And for $250, it was a no brainer!

+1 and a wired lav (tram is fine, but COS-11s are the "416" of lavs).

I also use this as a home system. Works great for an editing/small track count recording system. You can modify the HDDs to have a SSD for OS and disk for secondary, or both SSD if you got some money .

I use HDMI and thunderbolt connection for my two monitors, but I think a third can be used via firewire if you have the proper equipment.

You can get an HDMI splitter and a dvi to hdmi adapter from Monoprice.com to send pic to all rooms.

Also forgot to mention the Presonus Faderport. Works great as an inexpensive single fader/panning automation tool. You could get one used for around $100.

THIS! ADR for movies should have a killer room that is big enough that you really can't hear the room. Also be able to have a streamer or wipes or whatever you wanna call them.

+2 for the Room! Also make sure you have a fridge with LOTS of Bottled water, kettle for tea (and of course tea), and an excellent table/stand for the scrips that doesn't add any additional noise or sound to the recording (the metallic ring off a lot of music stands can be really annoying). And also spend some decent $$ on really good HVAC. ADR sessions can be long, and uncomfortable talent will a) perform worse and b) not want to come back. Make sure the room has quiet effective climate control, so that the talent can be as comfortable as possible - don't forget the headphones. Make sure they're comfortable as possible, since talent may be wearing them for a long time. Oh and make sure you have at least one extra pair for every pair in the booth- they WILL get broken.
