EBU R128 question

Hi,

First time doing a show to R128 specs and to me, my average levels are lower than they would be for say a BBC mix (granted PPMs will work totally different but...). I'm within the +-1 LU variable (usually slightly on the higher side) and my TP is well within the -1dbFS limit. Realise the whole idea is that you can add more dynamics in the mix but I'm a bit worried that even if I'm hitting the spec, it will be light on broadcast.
Just curious if this is normal or anyone else noticed it when transitioning over to the new spec?
Show is 5.1 and LtRt
Thanks

The meters don't lie... If it's 0 LU +-1 it is what it is. Try to take advantage of the dynamics and don't worry. The only thing you can do to make it seem louder is to boost the frequencies that seem to make it louder ;-)

Hi, yeah I know where you are coming from, it feels quiet and a bit alien, I have delivered quite a few adverts to the new specs over the last couple of months and it took some getting used to, in both "feel" and workflow.

When watching the meters I was constantly saying to myself "that can't be right!" I was working with 2 sets of meters at first, as in LUfs and a PPM just to see the comparison and yes it feels light.

Hang in there you will get used to it.

It's A LOT quieter than the -9dbFS stuff.

That's the whole point of it.

Solution is simple. Find yourself a new reference monitor gain (you had a reference monitor gain before, right?) and forget about the rest.

You can mix as slammed as before if you really need to (some shows' producers want the same sound as before etc.), you just have to lower your output. For some trailer stuff we're doing, we have to lower the output of the limiter to -11dbFS to get the same 'slamming' sound as before within the new specs.
Hopefully the producers/directors will get used to the 'new sound'.

Once you've been there, it's VERY liberating.

Thanks - Lion73, was doing exactly the same with the nugen and ppm meters beside each other and just wasn't trusting what I was seeing!

As a matter of interest, I did a show for this network last year and they were just on peak specs, no loudness. That show is still running so do they adjust all the older shows on broadcast via gain change to hit the -23LU mark or leave as is? Just curious if anyone has an insight
Thanks

A lot of content is batch-re-leveled with something like the NuGen LMB.
