True Peak -6dBTP?

Hey.. I've got a US broadcaster that has stipulated a -6dBTP in their specs. So far I've only come across -1 or -2dBTP as a requirement. I was curious whether or not this was a common spec in the US. Up until now, I thought that -2 was pretty much standardized in North America. Am I wrong? (I suppose I am) Has anyone else come across more aggressive limiting values like -6?

Yes -6 tp is the standard. It is the itu 1770 spec and almost every us broadcaster now asks for it.

Thanks Brandon. That's very helpful! Misinformation on my part- I've only delivered to the UK and Canada since the CALM act has gone into action and I thought Canada and the US would have the same TP values.

Cheers.

Ahem ahem , some may remember that I said TP was coming to a spec sheet near you!! Naysayers beware!

Back to the OP's topic, I've only seen -1/-2 dBTP until now delivering docs and fiction for VOD in canada. Have not seen -6 as of yet. Still beats -10!!!

-9dBTP here as they are still running analogue transmission, that will shift to -1.2.or3 who knows. Its a bit vague but lets face it it's all a step in the right direction IMHO

-10 dB peak maximum is an old analog cable modem limitation that still is lurking in some delivery specs. Many of the major networks here in the US have finally dumped it and are now specifying the BS-1770 -2 db true peak maximum.

There is a new revision of BS-1770 that I've not seen yet, and they may have updated the peak specification. TC Electronics recommends a max peak level around -5 dBFS if you are feeding a nonlinear coder, such as MP3. There are many filtering processes inside the coder, and some implementations apparently don't have enough headroom internally to deal with the resultant filter overshoot and will clip on -2 dB peak levels. So, it could be that -6 dB max peak requirement is trying to anticpate nonlinear coding overload.
