Thread Starter | Need your feedback on SFX Library for Freelancers (Survey + $25 gift)
As New York audio post people know, Sound One, a staple audio post house, is in danger of closing. It got me thinking that with the number of freelance sound editors/designers growing, I should try to put together a sound effects library through Pro Sound Effects geared towards independent sound engineers who don't have access to the massive libraries the big studios do.
Between downloading individual sounds to a large collection on a hard drive, or a yearly fee vs. buyout, I'd love to hear your thoughts and wishes about what would work best for you. We have a huge resource that is underutilized by my fellow independent sound editors, and I'd love to remedy that.
Take a sec to fill out the form (and get a $25 voucher for our Online Library) and feel free to email or post your thoughts as well. The form is here.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Jeremy

Prices are a little high for the average user (it comes down to the sentimental value debate I suppose - I can understand how much time went into creating these!), and a membership level for unlimited monthly downloads would be great. |

Yeah on the site, the price is a bit high when compared to say like sounddogs or soundsnap (soundsnap also offer unlimited downloads for $250 a year).
I really like the layout and functionality of your site though. Very easy to look through things and audition samples.

No chance. not when there's dozens of great and focused libraries out there (see the SFX thread) for 50 to 100 dollars/euros. At those prices for 1 effect I'd rather pay a bit more and buy a whole library!
Take a look at Sounddogs! The prices are generally based on file length too. on your site a 2 second bat drop was the same as a 3 minute atmos. a 3 minue atmos i might pay close to $5 for, but your pricing strategy doesn't seem structured. Something to consider maybe....
A yearly subscription would be great, and the sort of thing you'd get post houses using. the company I work for uses sounddogs when we need to grab something not in our libraries, which is a few times a year. we pay per effect, but I wouldn't pass your site as an option untill the pricing is sorted tbh!
Massive kudos on the site though, I enjoyed using it very much!

Thanks for the feedback, folks! Please keep it coming!
As far as the pricing goes, we wanted to simplify the process and incentivize the subscription options, which feature volume discounting.
What makes us a bit different from SoundSnap, though, is that their library is largely crowd sourced / user-generated content, and not offered at high resolution. Our library is comprised only of content from reputable, professional sound designers - Ric Viers of the Detroit Chop Shop, Stephan Schutze who is the FMOD spokesman, Soundrangers who are award-winning game sound designers, etc. It's a carefully curated collection of sounds that are intended to cover all the basis and not contain "junk."
For annual / custom pricing plans, we handle those off-line and on a per-case basis. For example, Company X has 5-users, and needs 1,000 downloads per year - that is a custom scenario that comes up frequently but is tricky to implement online. Perhaps we could do a better job of communicating that we have custom solutions for any needs?

That being said, at the current price level you are alienating a lot of potential smaller clients (unless you are looking strictly at the pro market). I hate to say it but, 1/5 or 2/5 max of your current per effect price is probably reasonable. Remember a lot of people might throw these effects into the mix and then decide they want another sound (it is a form of composing after all). Even at 1,000 downloads a year (which I imagine would be pretty pricey!) that's not a lot of room for leeway. I think it comes down to the sentimental factor again, yes they are wonderful sounds but...there's lots of wonderful sounds out there. (A lot of which are on your site )

I actually like SoundSnap, I suppose one person's "junk" is another person's "treasure".
"Professionally" and "reputable" are rather subjective terms. Some SFX from "reputable" sources, to me, equate to "canned" or "lame".
Either way, a blanket $5 per effect price seems way high. I've paid $9+ for Sounddogs effects, but they're long files, not 0:00.

With some companies whose content might sound "canned," it's because those sounds have been in existence for decades and used repeatedly.
PSE's entire library (save the BBC Nature & Historical Archives) was created in the last 5-6 years, and many of our libraries come with free, continual updates (~100-200 new sounds) every three months for life.
Please keep the feedback coming! Reminder you get a $25 coupon for completing the survey, and the result of all this should be a pretty radical offering!

Hi jiegal no time right now for your survey. Maybe in a bit. I can tell you I spend about $2500 a year on sound effects. I don't know if I would personally spend $1200 of that on your subscription service. I tend to work fast and I do have a large library and don't need to take the time to hunt and peck for single effects on the Internet. I do realize these services are valuable and want to say if you do have good custom stuff you should package it and sell it like a lot of the other guys do and I will buy it.
I think I own all of the micro libraries aside from maybe 4.

Package your sfx up like the boomfx guys. U get a couplef gb of sfx for $120-$200
And it would be the best quality sfx library I own.

I have owned the Sound Ideas 1000-6000 library for years and along the way picked up the Lucasfilm, Hana-Barbera and Warner Brothers updates. I brought all of the CDs into iTunes when the catalog codes became available.
A micro transaction model could work. A yearly fee for access to the entire library could also be very cool. Various packaging setups at different price points would also be interesting and is kinda the way I have invested over the years... $200-600 at a time.
I'd definitely be interested in hearing how the plan proceeds.

Hey folks - just wanted to thank you all again for your great feedback!
We pooled all of our data and came up with a library that I think is going to blow some folks away when they see it.
Stay tuned - I'll be posting it later this week hopefully
Cheers,
Jeremy
