AES SF--missing exhibitors, like Avid?

I've been watching the exhibitors list for the SF AES coming up--missing so far: Avid, Steinberg, Yamaha...others. Strange.

Yamaha doesn't surprise me. Maybe Steinberg cannot compete with AVID now that Pro Tools works with CoreAudio and ASIO interfaces? AVID is a surprise, given that their audio HQ is a quick train ride away. I remember in 2008 they did something at their HQ. Maybe they are not even doing that this time.

Lots of audio equipment manufactures are skipping the trade shows. They say it costs too much and the return on investment is not good. It has happened at the CES and NAB shows already this year. With the internet the need for a large presence at a show maybe a thing of the past. Lots of companies are trying to save money and this is a good way to do so. Sending a group of salesmen and engineers to a show maybe a nice thing to do it costs a lot of money and the time and energies of those involved could probably be used for other things more profitable. There was a rumor at the last CES that the CES show may not be any longer since more and more audio manufactures are boycotting the show. Only time will tell.
