I need to record post production audio. HELP!!

The audio post production company did the sound editing for our movie. However, I want to add sounds and record additional ambiance and other things. I don't want to spend 2000 Euros on a Nagra. I need a good compromise. This is for a theatrical movie. What do you think about this tool? Can I get away with this?

TASCAM DR-100
Tascam DR-100 Professional Portable Digital Audio Recorder

Are the build in microphones good enough or should I use the XLR line in with better microphones? I own a 416 microphone, but I hear it is better to record ambiance using stereo recordings. I want to avoid having to buy a second 416. Keeping price in mind, what stereo microphone(s) setup do you recommend?

Thankl you.

My Recordings/Credits

It's fine for what you want to use it for.
People use those and zoom hn4's all the time for recording BG's and fx.

For the most part ambient BGs are constructed. You can use a recording from a decent field recorder like the DR-100, or, even better, use a stereo mic with a mid-priced recorder like the FR-2, HD-P2, PMD-661, etc. Once you have a nice long bed you put in the "details" that really bring the ambiance to life.

I am always curious why everyone wants to own all of their gear. I do audio post (and have plenty of $$$ tied up there), so instead of buying a $400 prosumer recorder I rent Sound Devices or similar quality gear for the few times a year I need to do field recordings.

Check out the Roland R-26. Has so many features compared to the rest. Up to 6 chan or recording at once too.

Røde NT-4 is pretty decent and will fit in a blimp if you got an adapter.

I've got a DR-100, it's pretty handy! The battery life sucks on AA though and the rechargeable battery can only be charged inside the unit.

I have a zoom and its on board mics are fine for collecting some stuff but for spot effext and dialogue or foley I use a blimped 416 or Rode NTG3. Going to buy an NT4 shortly.
Results from the Tascam and good for stereo bg's fx etc much the same as the Zoom but mics are a bit wide for spot effects or dialogue where bg rejection is needed also those on boards mics, like on the zoom have a bit of hf hype which can be a good thing but you may feel the need to roll off the files

The condenser mics on board the Tascam are OK. Useable for ambiences, just set the thing up on a stand and let it sit there. A Røde Dead Kitten can fit over the top, and is a must have if you're recording anything outdoors.
