Recording a few ADR lines with no studio

I have to record some ADR lines without a studio so I was wondering about the mic reflector as a make shift recording area or what would someone recommend in my predicament if a studio is not possible. I don't know what mic was used during production so I was going to use my audio technica 4030. Should I rent a different mic and if so, which one?

The large condenser will not sound right, you should rent another mic, a Sennheiser MKH416 or a similar shotgun mic would be your best bet. Plus if it sounds like it is a lav they used than rent a lav as well. You can always get the producer to contact the recordist on set to find out what he did. You could use the reflector but would probably be better off in your bedroom with blankets around him or a space that isn't too reverberant or roomy sounding. Have the mic above the head pointed at the mouth-chest area about 2-3 ft away. You def will need to do some EQ-ing and little reverb to get it close.

Preferably get the Mic used on set. Forget (in my opinion) about the Mic reflector. You would be better off putting blanket etc up around you, to reduce reflections.

Hope it works out for you.

Using a 416 is not a good idea unless you have access to a proper ADR studio. A mkh40/shieps or similar would be better.
But in reality the choice of mic isn't as important as treating the room as well as possible. Record in the largest quiet room that you can access, the smaller the room the more low frequency issues you'll get.
Use whatever dampening material you can like heavy drapes mattresses etc. avoid having the dampening material close to the walls. Avoid extreme close up micing if at all possible. But you still want as little room sound as possible but not by moving to close to the mic.

I thought my mic wouldnt be good. I'm renting a sennheiser 416 because I'm somewhat familiar with them. Im not too familiar with the other mic. Is the 416 not a good option for my session?

No the rear lobe is to distinct and colored. Even though it is heavily directional the sound that it does capture off axis is also heavily colored. It also has a crazy strong proximity effect so you have to be at a distance (1+ meter) to get a neutral 416ish sound. And distance is often the hardest to accomplish in a non-pro treated room.
All the above are the reasons why most recordists avoid a super directional mic like a 416 or even a mkh60 for interior recordings.

In a good size professional ADR studio it's a totally different matter!

In this kind of "guerilla" situation I've had good luck having the actor sit on a couch and pointing the mic down at them boom-style. Couches are usually both non-reflective and a pretty decent bass trap. You don't want the couch to be up against a wall, though.

What does the ADR have to match to? Interior? Exterior? If you can't get into a proper studio, at least try to get into a similar - but controllable - location as the original. Get both a good lav and shotgun (unless you know exactly what was used on set). Then do a search for Marti Humphies' (dr.sound) post on ADR recording. Performance, Placement, etc.
