Nuendo 5.5 percs...

Sup slutz,

I have recently started a part time teaching position at a media collage here in Norway teaching "Sound and Music Production (first year)". The featured software for this coarse is Cubase however, as a teacher, I get a master license that opens all Steinbergs software . After realizing this I promptly got my hands on Nuendo 5.5 to give it a spin in a post mixing situation and I have say, I quite like it! Don´t get me wrong, I like it but I haven´t gone deep enough too be comfortable in a large mixing situation but there are just a few features that I feel are really handy for post (or music for that mater).

Folder Tracks:
Firstly, these are great! I found it really handy too have the ability to fold all your FX/BGs/DIAL or whatever tracks at the click of a button. This could be really useful when editing busy sessions IMO. Also, you can have folders within folders for all the food groups and even for your sends which is pretty cool and keeps things simple and easy to find.

Automation Logs:
I liked this... allot. You can even name your logs! Elegant. Also they had an automation mode that allows you to glide into the next set of settings... Its probably adjustable but in certain situations, this might be exactly what you need for a smoother transition with no fuss.

Offline Processing Recall:
Its in the name. You can process you audio offline with any plugins you have and then recall, tweak or bypass it later. I can think of a few ways to take advantage of this and it saves some processing power in the bargain

64 bit...

Direct routing:
A nice little panel can be brought up in the mixer window that allows you to simply click on where you want your audio to be routed too. Whenever you make a new stem (they call them group tracks) it appears on this window and can be routed accordingly with a click. This can also be automated. Fast and easy.

Cycle Markers:
Like normal makers, just that these identify the start and the end of a selection... a double click selects the area and is now ready to be looped and automated. Also sub markers (normal ones) can be added for other important info.

Offline Batch Export:
I think its pretty convenient to be able to batch process all your stems (and/or individual tracks) in your whole mix offline. Why not?

I run Pt HD10 and love it for mixing and editing... But I think some of the features listed above would be nice to have! If similar features exist in pt then please enlighten me.

Nuendo and PT's features have often been compared. At my facility we have been using Nuendo since 2004 and even though it was not always smooth sailiing I must say that not only does it get the job done, but it does it well!
Now of course by opening a thread like this you will undoubtedly be attracting the "if you work in post, work in PT" crowd. It IS a fact that most post facilities around the world use PT, even we own 4 PT rigs! But after that it's just a case of what tool you feel comfortable with to get your ideas out through the speakers.
Then when it comes to transferring to PT for the mix (in the event of mixing in a PT room), if things were planned from the start it is actually quite simple (AAF export).

Now back to the features: the ones you mention are indeed extremely handy, and until now being able to automate routing within a DAW is a rare feature (it might be possible in Pyramix, not quite sure). I think we can expect PT to catch up on some more of Nuendo's features (just like it caught up - finally - on real-time fades and clip gain, though that was not a Nuendo exclusive), just like Nuendo needs to catch up on a few of PT's functions (like "hide tracks" in the edit timeline).

Are you talking about hiding tracks with the markers? If so I cant say I have had any need for this myself... but then again, my mixes probably haven't been any where near the size of the ones you guys are running! But on the other hand, those folder tracks hide everything you don´t need to see which I missed when I first went from cubase to pt a few years back... I felt as though I could find things in large sessions faster than I can in pt where everything is just "here " if you know what I mean?

But then again, I feel slightly more steady when it comes to pro tools automation and edit features.

Not just markers but memory locations in PT (where markers are defined) and assign those to key commands to quickly recall any track layouts or groups. Killer feature for focusing on 10 tracks instead of 200+ or however many you have to scroll through.

I will give this a shot for sure! But this function only works properly when you have a set amount of tracks that you don´t tinker with correct? I remember when I first started mixing post, I tried this but I was adding tracks constantly so tracks got switched around when I opened these memory locations. I was running pt 9LE at the time so this might have been touched up for HD10. But if its the same, do you have to go in and adjust all of your pre existing memory locations when you need to add more tracks?
