Thread Starter | Console upgrade, should I even bother
Hi all,
In my small-medium room, I mix in Pt 9 with cptk on a euphonix mc control and an artist.
Ive been dreaming about ICONs since using one in a another studio a while ago but they are way out of budget for us now.
I have been throwing the idea around of getting into a used focusrite control 24. Im just getting serious about looking into this, and I wonder if its silly to get in to. ? Are the little eucon boards more advanced? They just feel dinky and arent reliable. They glitch often. How would a control 24 compare?
If i were to get one for my mix room, I could pass my euphonix boards down to our Foley studio which would speed things up a lot for them too
I could get a couple more avid mixes or use the funds to goto HDX sooner than later but the 10 bugs have kept me away since my mix system works well (except a lack of voices and TDm etc) id really like buttons for automation write , latch, touch, read to all and understand they put them back in the artists for pt 10.
Was looking for some input, thanks!

| Matt,
When I was researching control surfaces a couple of years ago, I looked at the Control 24. I ruled it out because it seems the original power supplies are prone to failure and because of the high profile. But you might want to check other threads about this on gearslutz and elsewhere.
I bought a used C|24 and it serves me well.

I believe you will be nice with the c24. I actually have one mix and control and under pt 10 with all item implemented under eucon 2.6.2 I actually live it.
I can do layouts
I can split all plug-ins
And i can access all auto functions I love like preview, capture and their punch ones.
For me the knobs are a of course small, but under 2k dollars I do believe it was ok.
I think you should try to get pt 10 to work with they, and try to sum money up to hdx and mc pro :-)

Thanks!
I believe a c|24 is about 10k range where the control 24 is around 3k used so not really in tr budget for that yet. Would be nice but not there yet !
We will upgrade to HDX but right now the bugs are showstoppers for our workflows and tight deadlines
Seems like its either the control 24 or sticking with the artist series :( or
am i confused?

Thanks Serge I will look into this!
That would really be something neat!!!

Now days I try to take all the juice of one equipament before move up.
I`m using PT 10 with HD Native... Rock Solid.
With the Eucon implementation the artist series are really good - if you can live with the
small buttons. Because you said you did no try PT 10 yet, your artists are under used- specially the Control one.
I have worked with all those, Control24, Euphonix System 5, Icons, C|24, Artists...
The point for me is the balance between your revenue and your workflow.

I've mixed major Hollywood Features on my dual Control 24's.
Both of them had a power supply die. The supplies were replace and they worked flawlessly for the next 6 years! The monitor section on them suck.
That's why I had a Martinsound Multimax with remote and used it until yesterday. Get the used Control 24 for $3000.
I can sell you the Multimax real cheap. Works great.

I think the plan will be to first upgrade to 10 (since its a cheap upgrade) I will finish the next mixes on the artists with the full eucon support from 10. At the same time will try be in the market for the right control 24 and invest when the timings right between gigs.
I don't currently have a monitor controller, I use Waves 360 Manager mixing ITB,
Do you mind sharing what sucks about the monitor section?
Cheers

Gotta say, I'm on PT 10 and still using my Procontrol. I will use it until I can't anymore. I have tried the C24 and I hate where the automation control section is. Way up in the left hand corner, out of reach. I don't know what I'll get next. Hopefully Euphonix will come out with a mid range board for a small room.

It has probably been repaired and had parts exchanged more often than Paris Hilton changes shoes, but hey, still up and running.
I do admit I'm looking forward to an upgrade though.....

I can't say enough good things about the artist controllers. By far the best bang for your buck of any pro tools controller ever released. With pt 10 and all the new eucon features, they are like little icons but with a few features icons don't have. I've used every single controller that works with pro tools. Trust me, artist and pt 10 is really really powerful and fast. The way plug ins focus with tracks is just awesome. I keep the eq on focused on the control and the dns focused in the mix. I'm instantly editing plug ins on any track I have focused. That's just the basic 101 version of why eucon rocks. Keep the artist.

Thanks! It sounds great! With PT 9 those things only happen 7/10 times for me. Eqs decide not to pop up on screen but do on the board etc. , this and no "automation to all" buttons are killers for me. Albeit the auto stuff was briefly in 9 w/cptk but was removed
Im cloning my drive to try pt 10 on the next mix, i guess if I stay with them id have to snag one of those Argosy G-series desks |

the questions I always ask myself when thinking of spending money on gear.
Will it replace something non-operational that i MUST use or replace?
Will it make me more money?
Will it make my job easier or faster?
Will it bring in new clients?
DO I really NEED it for a gig... or do I just want it...
just saying...
If you do need a new console, i would definitely go Euphonix personally.
c|24 , ICON, S5 Fusion, System 5...
cheers

They are terrible and expensive, but cheaper then a s5, a dfc, etc...

Changing plugin automation on the other hand I do find slow and subsequently use the mouse. When I use a d command/control that's never the case.
