DG audio deliverables/CALM

hey Posties-

i'll try to make this brief.

i recently found out that DG (who is the primary distribution network for TV commercials in the US? please correct me if i'm wrong) is observing CALM Act specs...with a -24LKFS +/- 2 target.

my question is, do they have a program peak limit? in the past, i've been advised to brick-wall at -10dBFS for general TV commercials. i didn't see on their spec sheet any mention of program peak.

anyone have any advice?

thanks a lot,
marty.

-10 dBFS peak is generally recognized as for analog legacy transmission. CALM/ATSC 85 does not require -10 dBFS peaks, it is not above -2 dBFS true peak. Best to contact DG for their requirements.

really....if that's correct, perhaps dg would like to observe my extended middle finger.
seems a bit like a cardboard box manufacturer telling you how many bananas you're going to put in their container, or the postal service mandating a 12-point
helvetica font on all correspondence. oh, wait, lemme guess...they're happy to turn your mix up or down for you, stick you with an outrageous fee, and save the broadcaster the trouble of doing it at no charge.

I know most mixers for the past year at least have been setting their peaks no higher than -8. I've been getting away with -8 through DG for at least 2 years now. Most TV networks are a -2 peak limit on surround mixes, but still maintaining a -10 peak for stereo mixes. Either way, what's awesome about the -24 LKFS requirement is although you are definitely hitting -10 for peaks, you aren't slamming it like we used to when we mixed to 0 VU! I think the average dial norm for "legacy" commercials, as I'll so call them, was always around -18 LKFS ±2dB. Just my meager thoughts.
