Music promos & watermarking

Hi everyone!

I run an independent label in London and recently I found myself hating the world because my promos end up on torrent pretty much the day after having sent them to DJs, Radios and bloggers!

I know piracy is something we all have to live with but, I'm sick and tired and want to put up a fight!!! :-)

So I'm developing a new web based promo system and I would like to embed a watermark into the mp3s I send out, so I can track the bastards who post my precious music on P2P and take them off my promo list ;-)

Any suggestions for a software that can:
1) embed watermarks
2) output to Mp3 (at different resolutions)
3) run on a server in conjunction with a database driven website/promo system/ music shop

?

Thanks!!

Claudio

Interesting idea... I'd like to do something similar.

So I just searched the web. The first site I found: Watermark Embedding for Audio Signals

Though you can not order the software online.

As far as I understand atermarking something like mp3s is very difficult.

As far as I understand, if you watermark such that it is totally inaudible then it can be easily destroyed by converting it between different formats a couple of times. (mp3 -> ogg -> mp3) or by playing it out of one system and into another recorder via an analogue method. You have to make sure the watermark is embedded in the audio wave form, not as part of the metadata as this can be destroyed.

Whereas a more robust watermarking system would sound audibly different between different files.

musictrace.de states that their watermark is inaudible and is not destroyed when converting formats, or the audio quality gets so bad until its not usable anymore.

Watermark your Music Easily

Hey Guys,

If you're interested, I just launched a service which helps with this exact problem (watermarking of music), It's called TrackTrack.it. It works with a number of file formats (wav,mp3,mp4, ogg, flac, aif) but, full disclosure, there is a conversion process.

Anyway, if you send your song to 30 different people, they'll each get a uniquely watermarked copy, which is inaudible, so if it ever shows up on a file sharing site you'll know exactly whose copy leaked.

We do a ton of other things, too. You can send songs from your iPhone, track to see if a person listens to a song, send streaming only links, see where (on a map) they listened to the song, etc etc. And it's SUPER easy.

I hope this doesn't seem too spammy, but I'm a musician, originally, and I got sick of all the leaks in the industry and thought that it'd be nice to fix it!

You get 30 sends for free, check it out I think you might like it.

Whilst this is not a watermark solution it does however secure your material.

Watermarking And Tracking Technology

This company TuneSat. Track. Protect. Collect. offers a well tested watermarking technology which is being used by a number of music publishers and artists. With technology like tunesat and tracktrack.it becoming widely available I feel that the smaller artists and labels will have a fighting chance of getting paid for their work!

Thanks a lot. It's not watermarking but fingerprinting. It reads promising:

I’ve heard of watermarking. Is fingerprinting the same as watermarking?
No. Audio watermarking is the process of embedding new information (a watermark) into an audio file so that it can be identified, much like a tattoo. Audio watermarking requires a file to be put into circulation only after it has been watermarked. Existing files already being broadcast would not be detected using watermarking technology.

Audio fingerprinting, on the other hand, is a passive technology, which means it does not embed anything into the audio file, nor interfere with the broadcast. Much like a fingerprint scanner, TuneSat’s proprietary technology analyzes the unique characteristics of each music file and compares it to other content such as broadcast TV and multimedia files from the Internet for the purpose of detecting a match.

Even survives DSP-processing like compression, pitch-shifting, stretching etc.
