Thread Starter | post guys love pro tools universe window
Saw a post slagging off pro tools universe window, but it got lots of love from post guys. I'm not post myself, so can someone who is tell me how its useful to your workflow?

It's a good big-picture look at the session, and also a quick way to navigate to a general location in a project if you don't have a marker in place. Most music sessions are one song apiece, maybe a few minutes of material, so navigating around isn't that hard. A post session could be an hour or more in duration, so the Universe can be handy for seeing everything that's out there, since relatively little of the playlist is visible in the Edit window at one time.
That said, I don't use it much anymore. Markers are more precise and quicker.....you just have to remember which one to call up when you want to find a particular spot.

Of all the reasons we could be slagged for, we get slagged for the Universe window? Isn't working post enough of a reason?

would you use universe more if it was more sophisticated, such as being able to put/ see markers on universe window, or have some level of zoom in place?

But if you have good descriptive markers, you can just hit apple-5 to call up the marker window and click on the relevant marker.

J | I find it pretty useless in super-sessions and you can barely see the clips on the dark grey B/G. And there is no playhead so you can't see were you are currently playing. I wonder how they could forget the playhead in that window..
The video-universe however is very useful.

It has great psychological value--like "how far do I still have to go to get to the end of this reel?" etc.

I never use it. I turn it off as it makes the edit window smaller and I use the edit window a lot. If it was floating or something then I may take a look at it but I memory marker myself all over the session anyhow.

it is nice if you work in supersessions.... you can very quickly jump around the timeline with it.

Use it from the first minute. Very useful for me. Speeds up navigation tremendously.
