Finally watched this and had the same reaction. The musical score was poor to the point of distraction every time the cheesy Star Trek-esque theme was played.

Sound design wise, the first Alien remains the leader. Come to think of it, the first Alien remains the leader in every category: cinematography, sound design, story... and even visuals if you think of it. Prometheus looks like a video game. Alien looks like reality. While Prometheus is a good piece of entertainment, it lacks the dirty organic reality of the first Alien. Story wise, there are some major over the top non credible action scenes in Prometheus, whereas in Alien everything seems real. The sounds of Alien are scary... truly scary... from the heavy breathing to the warning signal to the ticking sound of the Nostromo Bridge... the sounds in Prometheus are the standard high end audio package without anything worth remembering. Seriously, Prometheus is to Alien what Ketchup is to a Tomato. It taskes good, it goes with anything, but you don't eat Ketchup in top line restaurants.

I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was fantastic!!! It will the be the first 3D Blu Ray I purchase. I hear that Ridley Scott also has another Blade Runner film in the works. Im glad to see him returning to Science Fiction!

Mission To Mars, 2000:

Team goes to Mars and find an alien structure which they enter.
Find out the inside has atmosphere.
"I'm taking off my helmet."
"No! Don't!"

Takes off his helmet anyway.
They find pre-recorded message by aliens.
Turns out Aliens seeded earth.
Turns out the inside of the space is a ship.
One person takes off in the ship/pod to meet their makers.
Gary Sinise even says: "This is an invitation."

sigh...

That fits perfectly with the scenario and dialogue then.

The convolution of the helmet blew my mind. Of course, it's not unusual to simulate environments/processes this way, and it's not the idea of the century... but it wouldn't have come up to my mind to do it for ADR in this particular case. And it sounds so good.

And if i am not mistaken they called in Harry Gregson-Williams and other 4 as additional composers to copy that theme, as Marc Streitenfeld probably did not do it...

You can't expect actors to do a good performance on such a tragic dialogue or script.

Actually I was boggled that such a high budget film could have such a bad script and dialogue. Shockingly appalling.

Agree whole heartedly. I actually bought the BD version for £10 and felt extremely disappointed - terrible, terrible movie and not a patch on the original.
