jam sync - audio from different sources

Hello to all,

Sorry if this is not the right forum but I thought these sync issues may be more common in post.

I have two audio-only recordings from the same concert - the one that was made by the theater crew (3 mics/channels, protools system, "hall" sound); and the other I did with the stage spots (sound devices, spots mixed as LR, dry/very 'spoty'). Both systems recorded at 24-44 - but no sync at all and not same start/end times.

I received all files and decided to put everything together to get a better sound. I did time align the files - visually and by ear - the best I could, so the sound 'glues' and files start together ('hall' a bit later, as it's 'hall' sound).

But the thing is: the first music piece is around 9 minutes, it 'starts' synced as I put, but near the end the sync gets jammed, and spots are late than 'hall' ?!?!

My question - is this common? Am I doing anything wrong or getting crazy?

In the second piece (ca. 27min) it gets even worse as there was a 'tape' recording playing along with the live sources + P.A. ... I have the tape itself, but sync gets even trickier with more sources and worse as time passes... delays... delaays... deeeelaaaaayssssss !

Is there a better way to sync these files?

Thanks for any help.

all the best,
Ave.

Hi, the different recordings differ in time because the internal clocks in the PT system and the Sound Devices recorder are not synced to each other. So the two recorders speed are slightly different. I think You should have made the Sound devices the sync master; sending wordclock out to the PT rig at the time of the recording.

Maybe it is possiible to timestretch the "hall" files?

good luck!

Yes, timestretching is your only option, or you could try resynching for every song. If drift is not too bad, it might stay in time for 3 minutes.

Oh, I re-read your post, timestretching is indeed your only option.

Hello postfieldmusic/arvid & huub, thanks for coming by!

Woow...! I never thought it could be so extreme as having to re-sync it from 3 to 3 minutes...! What amazes me is that both audio recorders (pt & sd) are good quality, and both were at 24-44 - even so drifting can be so much?!?

How can I achieve a better sync thru timestreching - I mean: files are different start times, different sizes, although the same content - how should I proceed to know how much to stretch?

Results are better to time stretch to the longest file or to the smallest?

Thanks again! All the best,
Ave.

I'd try editing instead of timestretching, sounds much better. Just align the beginning as good as you can, listen closely where things go wrong, jump back a few bars and edit on a transient.
