Program for Scoring?

So I am going to be doing my first score soon. It's a short film that my filmmaker friend has done, and I am excited to dive into a world I've always wanted to be a part of.

Are there some good DAW programs out there that incorporate video so you could score right along with the film? I will be using mostly MIDI..

I know Nuendo does video, but I'm not ready to make that kind of financial investment yet.

I have Windows 7, and use Cubase 6 as my primary DAW for music.

Maybe try running a program like Reason thru rewire so the timelines match so you can navigate in sync with picture.

why not cubase

Any particular reason you don't want to use cubase for scoring. Supports video and timecode, you must already be comfortable with it, seems like a good fit. Most composers I work with use Cubase, Sonar or Logic. Just depends on preference, so I think you are set. Get the video with timecode burn-in (imposed on the picture) so you can double check it against cubase's timecode and start composing.

I also don't know why you wouldn't use cubase. I would not recommend Sonar as its video handling is horrible. I don't know how reaper is.

Cubase can import videos but scoring sucks...

if you are on OSX you can get Muse Score, cool software but not sure if it supports Rewire

I had no idea Cubase supported any video. Problem solved, ha! Thanks all.

Maybe you should call Hans Zimmer, Steve Jablonsky, Harry Gregson Williams, and a few hundred other composers who score films with Cubase and tell them it sucks at the job. I'm sure they'd like to know such great advice.

And don't forget Digital Performer, which has more than any of them in the way of scoring features.

I use PT for everything, works fine for me, can export MIDI directly into Sibelius too. (But I've not tried that, so don't know how well it works).

cubase is fantastic for scoring. there is zero reason to switch to anything else.

have fun doing your score.
