They don't even know or care that what they did wasn't ADR but walla. I'm not about to register with the Grauniad just to correct them.

Hmm, it depends. If you're replacing/recreating reactions of people clearly on screen, then it could be ADR.
If you put the on screen stuff on your walla tracks you might get burnt during the director's viewing when he asks to tweak a certain character's reaction.

It can still be called ADR. I've seen it called "Group ADR" or "Loop Group" before. Walla is usually done in a Group ADR/Loop Group session.

The editors have to separate it into language specific and no language tracks... any language specific walla might need to get replaced in foreign language versions. the no language walla doesn't. But you don't do a separate session for them... they are all done in the group ADR session typically.

Is there a difference between "loop group" and "walla"?

in my experiences, "walla" is something the "loop group" does, as well as other things.

Etch-A-Sketch is right. A Loop Group will also perform individual incidental lines of dialog in addition to walla. Quite often they "ADR" the dialog lines of extras. They could be the voices of the actors greeting a dignitary in a receiving line, for example. Or they could be reporters yelling specific questions at a press conference. Both of these are quite different than walla, which is supposed to be wordless crowd noise.
