Pro Tools 9 audio through HDMI for a 5.1 mix

random thought but
can this be done?

for example; have computer with an HDMI output (macmini) go to a TV with a receiver and from the TV have 6 passive speakers and this way hook up a 5.1 system.

can pro tools "see" an HDMI as a audio out?

maybe with soundflower?

how about if its pro tools HD which has vca 5.1.. would the HMDI output show up in the hardware setup?

(im copying this thread here cause im guessing more folks here would be using or know more about 5.1 setups... sorry mods )

no it will not work- (I am pretty certain) CORE Audio will be dealing with an encoded 5.1 track. The easiest thing to do would be to get an AV receiver which can receive a 5.1 stream in AES mode (3 stereo streams) and allow it to make the HDMI audio sausage.

I haven't tried it with PT but it works under Nuendo using a Blackmagic intensity pro card.
I use it this way to hook up an alternate output feeding my 46" screen for crappy monitoring playback example.
But I have only tried it with stereo so don't know if it can replay all channels.

If you have a BM Intensity pro PT´s aggregate out will see the HDMI audio out as a 5.1 audio out

I haven´t tried it but it should work.

Especially if audio and video are in sync. There´s really now reason why there´s an offset when sending video and audio down the same cable from the same video-card.

Let us know what you find.

what makes the HDMI ouput from the blackmagic intensity pro different from lets a macminis one?

im guessing you can change the ouput format in the blackmagic software.
