Thread Starter | Logic Pro 9 or Digital Performer 8 for Post
I am currently using Garageband for Post. Keep in mind that I am doing this as a hobby doing mostly home movies, adding Foley, music, voice over, etc. to spice things up. I'm also getting into Stop Motion with green screen. I do all of my video editing in Final Cut Exprees. I've outgrown GB and I'm looking at Logic Pro 9 and DP8 for more horsepower. I'm just doing research on these two programs and want some people with real world experience doing Post with either of these. Thanks. |

Just because it will come up sooner or later, why not look into Pro Tools? From what I've heard, Logic isn't as conducive to post production as other DAWs. There are a lot of composers who love both, as they offer quite a bit in terms of music production. And to toss it out there, at NAMM, MOTU was touting DP 8's new video engine. Good luck! |

I've used logic for post and it's really frustrating, Logic is great bang-for-the-buck for Music Production. But really nasty for working with OMFs. I would suggest seeing if you could look into Pro Tools 10, then do so. The bundled plugins are perfectly useable. I know the cost of entry is considerably higher than Logic or DP, but I'd feel it's worth it. |

If you've outgrown GB for post, you will undoubtably outgrow Logic fairly quickly. Don't get me wrong... my Logic rig gets TONS of use - when I'm scoring. I actually switched over from DP, just because I liked the way Logic worked (and some of the built-in instruments). But for post, it's just not there. DP is usable for post, but it's strengths again lie more in composition and music. Looking at Sweetwater, the difference in cost between DP and PT10 is $200.00, so like many of the others I'd suggest going the PT route - otherwise you may just find yourself outgrowing DP or Logic just as quickly.

For Post, Digital Performer 7.... for sure. It'd be nice to assume that DP8 will be even better than DP7 but we won't really know until the release. As it is however, DP7/DP8... would probably be most pro's post choice (Tongue Twister) if you had to chose between the two and of course if DP8 is stable it should leave Logic Studio in the dust 'post-wise' (Unless of course Apple has some other 'voodoo' in mind). Pro Tools is still the contemporary "King" of post audio user friendly, efficient & functional DAW's and there's a reason why - It is still just that good, especially for post, the essential purpose for which it was designed. Logic Studio (Abelton, FL, Reason, etc.) is kinda like the "Akai MPC" of DAW's. It's an excellent programming tool for pre-pro but it wouldn't be my first choice for post at all but it is as 'fly' as can be when it comes to programming/laying down ideas/sequencing/songwriting. |

I just ordered DP 7 coming from protools 9 (ilok) and logic 9. I had a real hard time finding the funk feel/groove in those daw's. Right away in DP pick up my guitar and there was a pocket. So much easier to play to. I have no idea if the midi is better in protools hd. I have had my fill of trying to make logic and protools midi groove. The stuff my friends have done in DP blows away anything I've done in the last 5 years using logic and protools. i am talking about VI.s I should know if i made the right decision in a few weeks.

Without a doubt everybody will say get Pro Tools because that's what we use. It's just that due to various historical reasons most pro studios have it and it's easier to communicate. But if I were you I'd definitely look into Cubase. It has all you need and then some. When you outgrow it, you can always upgrade to Nuendo. Nuendo is amazing for post. Good luck! P.S. I use Pro Tools, but I've used Nuendo in the past and I'm still jealous of all the nice post features they get with each new update. |

Because I was sure that Logic was able to meet my expectations then there was a nuclear war in my studio between Apple and Avid and this for two months! We (Logic and I) have come to raise the white flag.

Neither PT nor Logic has all of the scoring features of DP, that's just a simple fact....but if you aren't writing music and just doing audio, I can't recommend anything better than PT. TH |

Well, I found out that my computer (the first generation Intel Imac with a Core Duo processor) is too old. It won't run Pro Tools 10 according to their specs. Logic, according to most is not good for post. I don't write music so scoring features mean nothing to me. I don't know what I'm going to do about this dilemma. So until I'm sure, I'm just not going to do anything for now. I'll just continue to use Garageband. I just up graded to Snow Leopard and iLife '09, so I'll try GB '09. Maybe it's better than GB '06. Who knows? GB is good enough for home movies. |

If you're imac is too old for pro tools 10 i would suggest you pick up a second hand mbox and use pro tools 7 or 8.
