Is genelc really bad for making orchestra music?thinking about to get a 5.1 here

I'm finally at the time to get a 5.1 monitoring systems for film/orchestra music production, thinking about genelc 8040. But some friends said genelc is too harsh and not good for orchestra music. Is this true? How is harsh related to orchestra? For some unknown reason all my local music conservatory use genelc for lessons. Would my music be too soft if I use the harsh monitors?

Among those who work exclusively with traditional orchestra music, genelec is not the most common IME.

Monitors are totally subjective. You learn the speakers you use and go from there.

I've used Genes for the past 10 years on everything from classical to hiphop to Feature film sound design. I know there may be better speakers out there but I know these inside and out and that's what matters

So, go to a pro audio shop, listen to a bunch of monitors, take what you heard with a pinch of salt and get some speakers. Then listen to things you know and like on them, learn their quirks. Then mix something and play it back somewhere else and learn how the sound changes. Do this 50 times

Then you'll know your monitors

Here's what is posted online for Skywalker's Scoring stage:

"CONTROL ROOM MONITORS
Large Allen Sides / Ocean Way Custom Monitor System L, C, R
Mid and Near Field B&W Nautilus 802 L, C, R, L/S, R/S Tannoy SGM10B w/ Mastering Lab Crossovers Tannoy PBM 8 Limpet (powered) L, C, R, L/S, R/S M&K MPS 2510 (powered) L, C, R, L/S, R/S Meyer Sound Labs 833 Meyer HD1 ATC 20 (powered) Genelec 1030A Yamaha NS10m
Subwoofers B&W ASW 4000 subwoofers (powered) (3) Tannoy PS115 (self powered) M&K MPS 5310 (self powered) (2)
Surround M&K S100B (ambient in wall for film mixing)"

Note; the various film mixing stages and sound design rooms have various speakers, mostly Meyer and JBL.

I use the Genelec 1031a at my home set up and with an 'X-curve' applied find they translate very well.

last time I was in Legacy Recording studio ( Now MSR ) in new york, they had Genelecs in the control room on their scoring stage. I've used them on a couple tracking / mixing gigs with large wind ensembles (over 50 pieces).... no probs.. but as stated above.. each to their own...

cheers
