Thread Starter | KMR 82 versus 81 for Foley
I know a lot of people recommend the 81 for Foley, but I happen to own an 82. Can I expect a big difference? Thanks!

In my experience, the on-axis frequency responses of Neumann KMR 82 and 81 are very similar. I've used my 81 to ADR movies where dialogue was recorded with 82, and they matched with great success. KMR 82 has a significantly narrower spatial response diagram, so it's more difficult to keep your object on-axis, especially on rather short distances between the mic and the object. In my opinion, it may be a problem with steps, rather than props.

The 81 has a 45 degree cone of capture. For very quiet sounds it's a little noisy, but it has captured everything I needed in fine detail. I routinely field-record props like office equipment, doors and cloth movement with it. It also works very well inside cars so far. It's my run and gun foley mic . I'm sure there are better options for some props, and you're likely to get a more natural sound with a nice big TLM and a good room for footsteps. It's not a flat-response mic either, so be ready for the (lovely IMO) boost in the highs. |
