I think a suit might be too formal... ; )

Hi,

Post can cover a lot of ground... Maybe put a short blurb about your focus. Are you mixing? Offering surround? Indie clients? Are you offering Sound Design? Foley? Do you need to be able to do good VO? Do you need to create Dolby files?

There are niches in post that focus on some of these and not others. Which area you focus on will make a big difference in what you need, but also, what message you're sending to your potential clients.

one tip...

make sure your "flatscreen" tv has a tube, rather than plasma or LCD. There are occassional lags with LCD and plasma (apparantly).

i know a ton of people in audio post here in NYC and they all seem to have CRT tvs

my focus will be diverse : foley, sound-design, mixing ,clients already have contacted me for all these grounds.... ad-clients as well as indie filmmakers

hope i gave enough info

indeed, post is a big topic and nothing learned very quickly. takes people years to begin to master it.

that said, how will display movies? pci card? fw interface?

my i suggest that you AVOID the canopus box as it has know drift and latency as well as terrible scrubbing. might i suggest the Aurora FUSE-X card, will play virtually any codec, has minimal latency and is less that $500 USD!

plasmas and LCD's certainly DO (always) have some latency. the amount changes depending on your video playback system. codec, data rate and type of input, i.e composite, component, SDI... all have different lags. you DO NOT want to get a big plasma and not be able to comensate for the delay. otherwise, you will get clients coming in and saying, "is that in sync?" plasmas can be anywhere from 1 1/2 to 4 frames late.

might i suggest you get this device : http://wwwsyncheck.com for post, it is as basic as an SPL meter. speaking of whcih, do you know how to calibrate your room? post is very different than music, and as such has certain standards and demands.

in europe, it is 1.228v=-18dBFS=0VU=+4dBU=85 SPL.

be prepared for a lot of extra time that you will need to put in.

Don't forget to add in enough money for an extensive SFX library as well.
And a reliable backup system.

you also realize that you will not be able to do surround with that setup.

well..at least not easily or elegantly. one has to jury-rig something to do surround in PT LE. it does not come with surround routing, panning, or processing.

but if you are just planning to stereo, then, you are fine.
