I use the 65s, love 'em.

Lots of people use the Genelec equivalent of the CMS50, and the 50s were recently awarded a prize when going against them.

If you're in the UK, I can recommend a company who'd let you try a pair.

I'm looking for some monitors to pull double duty, music/composing and film/tv post. Very interested in the cms 50/65. Very aware of their reputation on the music side, but also interested in hearing more opinions on them for audio post.

In general, monitors that provide excellent translation and frequency response are going to work well no matter what type of music or sound you are mixing/recording on them. A question of "I already know they work really well for X, but will they work for Y" should be understood as "if they work well for X they will work perfectly for Y".

It's more a matter of ensuring that your room is properly treated so that the monitors can show you all the details you need to hear. So often people expect that simply purchasing a pair of great monitors is going to make all the difference, even if their room has tons of problems. This is not the case. If the room won't allow you to hear all these details, great speakers won't help you out.

If your room is solid, the Focal CMS line is excellent (as are their more expensive monitors like the Solo and Twin).

Thanks for the reply. That's the opinion I hold as well. Just curious if there were any pitfalls. I visited your website and was wondering if you do any demos. My purchase isn't imminent as I've got some other outstanding obligations, but looking to purchase early next year.

If you are in the LA area you are welcomed to give me a call and schedule a time to come by and hear Focal monitors. The best time to do so is when you are ready to make a purchase as I've found that when you are evaluating your options you want those evaluations to be fresh in your mind instead of over long periods of time.

Try to find a dealer with several of your choices hooked up, take in some audio you are familiar with, esp something you've mixed. There is no substitute for a head to head shoot out, where you can concentrate on certain aspects of the sound and then immediately switch. Anything else is just guesswork.
